PUBLIC WORKS PERMIT PROCESS
How it relates to Building Permits:
1) Fill out our check list provided with a buildino permit applicaUon.
lf yes was answered to any of the above questions then a "public way" is
required. You can pick up an application at either community Development,
located at 75 S. Frontage Road or Public Works, located at 1309 Vail Valley Drive.
2) Notice sign offs for utility companies. All utilities must field verify (locate)
respective utilities prior to signing application. Some utility companies require up
to a 48 hour notice to schedule a locate.
3) A construction traffic control/staging plan must be prepared on a separate sheet
of paper.An approved site plan may also be used. This plan will show locations
of all traffic control devices(signs, cones, etc..) and the work zone, (area of
construction, staging, etc..). This plan will expire on oct. 1Sth. and will need to
be resubmitted for approval through the winter.
4) Sketch of work being performed must be submitted indicating dimensions (length,
width & depth of work). This may be drawn on the traffic control plan or a site
plan for the job.
5) Submit completed application to the Public Works's office for review. lf required,
locates will be scheduled for the Town of Vail Electricians and lrrigation crew. The
locates take place in the morning but, may require up to 48 hours to perform.
6) The Public Work's Construction Inspector will review the application and approve
or disapprove the permit. You will be contacted as to the status and any that may
needed. Most permits are released within 48 hours of being received, but please
allow up to one week to process.
7) As soon as the permit is processed, a copy will be faxed to community
Development allowing the "Building Permit" to be released. Please do not confuse
the "Public Way Permit" with a .Building Permit" to do work on a project itself.
NOTE:

developed the following procedures to ensure that new constructionsites have adequately established proper drainage from buildingsites along and adjacent to Town of Vail roads or streets.
The Toyrn of Vail Public llorks Department wiLl be required toinspect and approve drainage adjacent to Town of VaiI roads orstreets and the installation of temporary or pernanent culverts at
access points from the road or street on to the construction site.
Suctr approval- must be obt.ained prioi to any request for inspectionby the Town of Vail Buil-ding Departnent for footings or temporaryel"ectrical- or any other inspection. Please call A79-2L60 torequest an inspection from the Public Works Department. Allow a

husuant to your request, we visited the subject unit on July 8, 1997 in order to
rwiew structural repairs that are being performed.
Damaged 2xl0 floor joists had been adequately sistered with proper end hangers.
The new triple 2xl0 header was checked for end bearing, be,nding, shear and deflection
and formd to be adequate. An additional 2x4 was requested (to make a triple) beneath the
end ofthe header closest to the kitchen. Wall layouts botl above and below the subjeot
unit were examined and appear to adequately transfer loads.
An existing header over a door way just inside from the front door will be
removed. The header runs parallel to floor joists. A triple 2x4 post is proposed be'neattr
the end of an adjacent existing central header. This proposed framing change is
aoceptable.
Struotural repairs appear to be progressing in an order! menner. Already
performed and proposed struotural repair work as identified above meets oode. Hthere

PUBLIC WORKS PERMIT PROCESS
How it relates to Building Permits:
1) Fill out our check list provided with a buildino permit apolication.
lf yes was answered to any of the above questions then a "Public Way" is
required. You can pick up an application at either Community Development,
located at 75 S. Frontage Road or Public Works, located at 1309 Vail Valley Drive.
2) Notice sign offs for utility companies. All utilities must field verify (locate)
respective utilities prior to signing application. Some utility companies require up
to a 48 hour notice to schedule a locate.
3) A construction traffic control/staging plan must be prepared on a separate sheet
of paper.An approved site plan may also be used. This plan will show locations
of all traffic control devices(signs, cones, etc..) and the work zone, (area of
construction, staging, etc..). This plan will expire on oct. 15th. and will need to
be resubmitted for approval through the winter.
4) Sketch of work being performed must be submitted indicating dimensions (length,
width & depth of work). This may be drawn on the traffic control plan or a site
plan for the job.
5) Submit completed application to the Public Works's office for review. lf required,
locates will be scheduled for the Town of Vail Electricians and lrrigation crew. The
locates take place in the morning but, may require up to 48 hours to perform.
6) The Public Work's Gonstruction Inspector will review the application and approve
or disapprove the permit. You will be contacted as to the status and any that may
needed. Most permits are released within 49 hours of being received, but please
allow up to one week to process.
7) As soon as the permit is processed, a copy will be faxed to Community
Development allowing the "Building Permit" to be released. Please do not confuse
the "Public Way Permit" with a "Building Permit" to do work on a project itself.

NOTICE TO CONTRJACTORS,/OV{NER BUILDERS
Effective June 20, 1991, the Town of Vail Building Department has
developed the following procedures to ensure that new constructionsites have adequateJ-y established proper drainage from buildingsites along and adjacent to Town of Vail roads or sLreets.
The Town of Vail Public Works Department will be required toinspect and approve drainage adjacent to Town of Vail roads orstreets and the installation of temporary or permanent culverts at
access points from the road or street on to ttre construction site.
Such approval nust be obtained prior to any request for inspectionby the Town of Vail Building Department for footings or temporaryelectrical or any other inspection. Please call 479-2160 torequest an inspection from the Public Works DepartmenL. Allovr a
minimum of 24 hour notice.
ALso, the Town of Vail Public Works Department wilt be approvingall final- drainage and culvert installation with resulting roadpacching as necessary. Su.ch approval musL be obtained prior toFj.nal Certificate of Occupancy issuance.

I am rcsponding to your correspondence dated July 3 | , 1997. I believe all of your concerns on
"code" upgrades have been addressed with the conditions attachsd to the Building Permit. The
only other added upgrades that arc not addrcssed are:
I ) Replacc I /2" drywall with 5/8"x drywall in ccilings. The type of construction of thc
Brcakaway West building is V l-HR. Per the l99l U.C., all ceiling/floor assemblies are
required to be of one hour fre resistive construction. Any drywall that was damagcd due
to the fire or supprcssion thereof that is replaccd, is requircd to meet the l99l UBC.
2) The requirements of adding GFI plugs are required through the 1996 National Electric
Code.
3) A structural engineer is required to inspcct the framing duc to a fire within the unit. The
Town docs not confirm the structural integrity of thc building.
