Minor Exterior Alteration
General Information: This application is required for all proposals involving minor ch sitrM-
provements, such as roofing, paining, window additions, landscaping, fences, retaining walls, etc. Applicable Vail
Town Code sections can be found A www.vailgov.com under Vail Information - Town Code Online. All projects re-
quiring design review must receive approval prior to submitting a building permit application. An application for Design
Review cannot be accepted until all required information is received by the Community Development Department, as
outlined in the submittal requirements. The project may also need to be reviewed by the Town Council and /or the Plan-
ning and Environmental Commission. Design review approval expires one year from the date of approval, unless a
building permit is issued and construction commences.

1. Railing comments:
a. Do not use metal railing unless you are changing railings on both sides of duplex.

2. Roof structure over garage doors:
a. The roof structure over the garage entrance will not function properly, and will shed
snow on the driveway, which is prohibited by the regulations. (Mike Dantas, Brian

3. Windows:
a. The change to the windows is fine. (Mike Dantas, Brian Gillette)
4. Heavy beams:
a. Addition of heavy beams is fine, even without changes to other side of duplex. (Mike

b. Brackets over entry are acceptable, but should be eliminated over changed
windows. (Libby Plante, Tom DuBois)
5. Stone veneer:
a. Proposed stone is too extensive and should be reduced to small details. Otherwise,
stone should be added to entire structure. Stone must terminate on inside corners,
which does not occur underneath the deck. (Brian Gillette, Tom DuBois)
b. Stone is unacceptable if not added to other half of duplex, unless there is a small
focused area of stonework. (Pete Dunning)

14 -10 -5: BUILDING MATERIALS AND DESIGN:
D. The majority of roof forms within Vail are gable roofs with a pitch of at least four feet (4') in
twelve feet (12'). However, other roof forms are allowed. Consideration of environmental and
climatic determinants such as snow shedding, drainage, fire safety and solar exposure should
be integral to the roof design.
E. Rooflines should be designed so as not to deposit snow on parking areas, trash storage areas,
stairways, decks and balconies, or entryways. Secondary roofs, snow clips, and snow guards
should be utilized to protect these areas from roof snow shedding if necessary.
