Project: Red Sandstone Elementary - Playground Project No: 0910
Date: January 25, 2010
RE: Project Description
FROM:
Greg Macik, Principal
TO: VIA:
Planning and Environmental Hand
Commission, TOV
Remarks:
The proposed project is an expansion of the existing upper playgrounds at the Elementary School.
There should be no adverse effects on the surrounding community.
Project Description.
Upper Playground - See attached plans for additional information.
• Level existing grade and expand existing play area for new equipment.
• Install new boulder retaining walls and additional landscaping.
• Reconfigure existing irrigation system for new playground configuration.
• Install new concrete curb for playground delineation and wood chip border.
• Install drainage and wood chip (Fibar) playground surfacing under new equipment.
• Install new equipment for approximately 75-85 capacity total. Grade school ages 5 - 12.
Playground size is 117'-0" x 50'-0".
Equipment includes a large playstructure, swings and four individual play devices.
See attached specifications and equipment cut sheets.
Main playstructure - Constructed of recycled steel and plastic. Structure provides a variety of slides,
overhead and transfer stations.
Swings - Double Arch Swing set. Provide children a substitute type of swing which can handle
more children than the typical single seat swing. The large aluminum disk swings and can hold
multiple children at one time. Cut sheet shows a triple arch. We are only providing a double arch.
Epi-Center - Balancing device used by 5-7 children. The majority of the device is plastic.
Bid-toys Boldr- Large single play structure which looks like a large rock structure. The device
provides for about 10 -12 children creating a rock climbing adventure. The material is a light weight
concrete.
Supernova -Avery popular adaptation of the merry go-round. 8-10 children are challenged to
balance and use there strength while turning and spinning. The spinning portion is plastic with steel
supports.
Rock n Cross - This plastic steel arch can handle 4-6 children and combines balance, climbing and
strength into a single device.
Lower Area
• Existing Lower area equipment to be removed due to lack of maintenance and the need for a more
secured play area during school hours.
• Existing area will be reclaimed for continued community use as an area for sitting, picnics and etc.
• Grade area for new seating use and install new boulder retaining walls.
• Install gate above area along concrete path to school.
• Install new native seed and landscaping with new irrigation system.

No playground will be complete without these +
unique group swings. The swing base is made of -
aluminum and weighs less than 35 pounds. A
resistant rubber bumper surrounding the base
serves as an excellent shock absorber. The
suspended cords are fastened to the structure by
rotating ties that keep them from twisting.

The EpiCenterTM', an instant playground focal point, promotes collaborative
play by linking movement from kids at the periphery with kids in the center
bowl. Rocking side-to-side moves adjacent pods in and out, and vice versa.
The complex interlinked motion of the EpiCenter promotes cooperation,
develops balance, core strength, and is loads of fun!

Product Benefits
Use your strength and hold your balance! This seems to be the
best way to describe the kind of play that takes place on the
Supernova. A single child can engage in exploring its
possibilities, but together with a whole group of children, this
play item expresses its real potential. The large, slanting ring is
set in motion by the children. Turning, spinning, balancing or just
enjoying the ride are among the countless play options of the
Supernova.

An exciting new play event from BigToys, the ME05 is presented.
Children in the elementary age group nowadays enjoy a challenge
which they have to "figure out". Once they give it a try, the ME05
displays a wide variety of complex play opportunities. First off, is
a rocking event. Children sit on the bench surfaces at either end to
rock like a see-saw. Then, the bolder ones grab onto the hand grips
underneath to ride as the curved carriage piece rocks back and forth
over the pipe track. The children will naturally explore opportunities
for "games with rules"; communication, co-operation and socialization
occur as everyone has fun trying out the many tricks available on the
ME05.

Dear adjacent property owner:
This is a courtesy notice to inform you that on February 15, 2010, the Town of Vail Zoning Administrator
approved an amendment to a conditional use permit for a public school and active outdoor recreation
facilities (playground) at Red Sandstone Elementary School. A site plan is attached for reference.
The conditional use permit was approved at the time the school was builtand allowed for the construction
of the school and the outdoor recreation facilities. The current application, made by the Eagle County
School District, amends the conditional use permits by changing the layout of the active outdoor recreation
facilities, including the playground and associated equipment.
As required by Section 12-16-10, Amendment Procedures, Vail Town Code, Staff determined that the
amendments met the following criteria:
1. The amendment is in accordance with all applicable elements of this code and the Vail
comprehensive plan; and
2. The amendment does not alter the basic character or intent of the original conditional use permit;
and
3. The amendment will not adversely affect the public health, safety, and welfare.
This administrative approval will be reported at a public hearing before the Town of Vail Planning and
Environmental Commission on Monday, February 22, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. in the Vail Town Council
Chambers, located at 75 South Frontage Road. The Planning and Environmental Commission reserves
the right to “call up” this administrative decision for its review at a future public hearing.
Pursuant to Section 12-3-3, Vail Town Code, appeals of administrative decisions may also be filed by
adjacent property owners, the applicant, adversely affected persons, or the Vail Town Council. Should you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at 970-479-2173.
