This installation is all about the moon and her phases, and consists of three sculptures. Two of the three sculptures are the crescent and gibbous phases of the lunar cycle. The third (central)sculpture represents either a full or new moon as a ring shape with an empty center. Each sculpture is approximately 11’tall by 11’wide with the moon portion at an 8’diameter. Originally we presented these sculptures in a line so the viewer could look through all of them and the negative spaces in between would change depending on the angle from which they were viewed.Upon further consideration, and taking some time standing in the Gore Creek Promenade space,Jake and I decided that these sculptures would be better displayed individually. This layout (see attachment)puts each of the moon sculptures close to the walkway, allowing intimate viewing for those unable to,or not interested in,walking on the sometimes slippery packed snow surface. This layout also takes the most advantage of the protection from the sun offered by the buildings on the south side of the Promenade, giving the installation its best chance for longevity. As a second option we have also brought back the concept of three vertical “boat”shaped forms arranged back to back with the “deck”of each form facing outward at the points of an equilateral triangle.(They are not meant to be boats, but the nomenclature helps in description). The faces,or “decks”are divided into squares and rectangles (inspiration from Mondrian). This design is mostly about light. The “hulls of the boats are opaque, formed out of packed snow, while the “keel”and the decks are clear ice.The light from the embedded LED’s will pour outward from the 3 decks, and from the 6”wide stripe down each keel.I have tried to demonstrate this effect with the pencil drawings attached. Thank you for your consideration.
