General Information: This application is required for all proposals involving minor changes to buildings and site im-
provements, such as roofing, painting, window additions, landscaping, fences, retaining walls, etc. Applicable Vail
Town Code sections can be found at www.vailgov.com under Vail Information — Town Code Online. All projects re-
quiring design review must receive approval prior to submitting a building permit application. An application for Design
Review cannot be accepted until all required information is received by the Community Development Department, as
outlined in the submittal requirements. The project may also need to be reviewed by the Town Council and /or the Plan-
ning and Environmental Commission. Design review approval expires one year from the date of approval, unless a
building permit is issued and construction commences.

This is an attachment to the DRB review application submitted by the Vail Recreation District regarding the
replacement of the retaining wall on courts # 1 & 2 at the Vail Tennis center. The retaining walls on courts #3 & 4
were replaced in the Fall of 2007 and we would like the walls on courts # 1 & 2 to look exactly like the walls on # 3
& 4. 1 have detailed existing conditions for both sets of courts.
Existing Conditions:
Wall and Fence detail:
This is the existing retaining wall and fence on courts # 1 & 2 that we would like to replace. The old wall is an MSE
block wall with a brick ridge top. This wall is falling in multiple locations and has damaged the liner of the clay
court irrigation system.
MSE & brick retaining wall on courts 1 & 2
This is the new retaining wall on courts # 3 & 4. It is a concrete retaining wall with steel reinforcement. We are
very happy with this wall and feel the natural concrete creates a nice "frame" of the green clay court as well as
compliments the court lines and netting. The black fence posts and fabric also match the black tennis net posts.

Post Connection Detail:
The posts on courts # 1 & 2 are currently on the exterior of the retaining wall and the fence terminates on the
exterior of the wall. This fence condition has resulted in an injury during the 2009 tennis season. The posts on
courts # 3 & 4 are mounted through the center of the concrete retaining wall providing better support for the post
as well as eliminating the opportunity for a guest to slide off the court and under the fence.

Fence Extension:
Courts # 3 & 4 currently have a 10' high fence on the West side. This helps keep balls in the court. We propose to
10' fence on courts 3 & 4
replace the existing 4' fence on the West side of courts 1 & 2 with a 10' fence.

Specifications:
We propose that all posts, horizontals and struts be powder coated black to match existing fencing on courts 3 & 4.
The fence fabric will be vinyl coated black also matching the existing fence on courts 3 & 4.
Posts — 3"
Top & middle horizontal rails — 1 - 5/8"
Vertical struts — 1 — 7/8"
Fence fabric — 9 gauge
We also propose to landscape in front of the wall located on the South side of courts 1 & 2. We will be planting
shrubs and bushes to conceal the concrete retaining wall from sight of guest utilizing the bike path to the Ford
Amphitheater.
