As requested, we observed the conditions at the site for the purpose of providing �
preliminary foundation design recommendations for the proposed addition. Our �
observations and recommendations are presented in this letter. The services are �
supplemental to our agreement for professional engineering services to you, dated July
28, 2010.
'The deck addition will be along the south side of the residence and be supported on
several isolated footing pads. There may also be a low retaining wall constructed of cast-
in-place concrete. We assume relatively light foundation loads. ;
�
A representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical visited the site on July 29, 2010. The �
site conditions along the south side of the residence are characterized primarily by a
bedrock ledge above a steep slape down. The exposed bedrock, below a few inches of '
€
topsoiUsoil, is hard and appears generally unweathered. The existing deck is founded on €
footing pads bearing on the bedrock with limited frost cover. The residence in this area ;
has a garden level and basement is probably founded on spread footings bearing on �
bedrock. �
It should be feasible to found the deck addition with footing pads or continuous footings �
bearmg on the hard bedrock. The footings can be designed for an allowable bearing };
pressure of 3,000 psf. The footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for �
continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. All topsoil, soil and any loose disturbed
inaterials in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to
undisturbed hard bedrock. It should be feasible to provide reduced or no frost cover for �>
footings bearing on the hard bedrock with a minimal rick of frost heave. The footings
should be dowelled into the bedrock on a regular basis. Foundation walls acting as �
retaining structures should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an �

' This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the faotings have equal or better �
' support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than

Asbestos Testing &Abatement Requirements
iAsbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders from ex-
posure to harmful asbestos. The Town of Vail asbestos abatement program is in addition to the State of Colorado's regu-
lations. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for their requirements
at the contact info listed below.
When is asbestos testin4 required?
ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing:
One-and Two-Family Dwellings: 32 square feet
All Others (commercial spaces, hotel rooms, etc): 160 square feet
Definition of a single-family dwelling: any dwelling unit that is used primarily for a single family, including
multi-family/condominium units,and fractional fee units.
Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.
Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State-certified and Vail-registered abate-
ment contractor. An asbestos abatement permit must be approved, and the clearance letter must be submitted to the
Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued.

Re: Complaint of possible misuse of a professionals seal
Dear Mr. Wibbenmeyer,
The Town of Vail, upon conferring with legal counsel, has filed a complaint with the
Division of Professions and Occupations of DORA in regards to possible misuse of your
seal on plans designed by Thomas Edwards, architect.
Please be aware the use of a registrants seal on plans and documents is considered a
matter of life safety and an obligation of the towns building codes. If future misuse of
your seal is found within documents presented to the Town of Vail the matter shall be
referred to the town's prosecutors' office.
