Box 606 •Naif, CoCorado 81658 • (970j 926 3594 June 21, 2009 Mr. Don MacLachlan Cascade Village Property Management 1476 Westhaven Vail, CO 81657 Re:Coldstream tree report Dear pon, On Tuesday, Apri128, we met at Coldstream to review the management of trees on the north side of units 27& 30, the conifers north/east of the hot tub, and the prospect of planting additional trees west of Unit 17. This brief report will summarize our discussions and provide my recommendations. Trees adjacent to Units 27 & 30 This area is very dark due primarily to two large spruces. Given the growth habit of blue spruce,this azea will become more shaded with each year of overstory growth. Also, with each year of added dripline expansion and hei�ht growth, the resultant increase in shade will prompt the lower branches to decline, due to shade intolerance. The net result of less sunlight in this area is it will grow less grass(more raw dirt), and provide less low canopy density(less privacy between units). If landscape appearance and privacy is a concern to owners, I would suggest that one or both spruces be removed. I also recommend the addition of subalpine fir or bristlecone pine. Subalpine fir stock is more difficult to find in a nursery but it is the most shade tolerant of the two. Bristlecone pine is more expensive, but it is easier to top prune irrto a limited height omamental short tree. However, each would need a pruning rotation every 3 years to maintain them as short trees. Tall bushes such as dogwood would also be appropriate for this site. Trees North/NE of hot tub This area is now so dense with lower tree branches that views of the river from the hot tub and pool are very restricted. I recommend removing one concolor fir. I also recommend scheduling a columnaz prune and a slight lifting(not more than 18" from grade)of the lower canopy on the remaining 6 conifers.
