performed by utilizing smoke bombs along with the SMACNA test apparatus to identify

RESULTS
Attempts were made during the site visit to perform the SMACNA test, however, it was
determined that due to the small size of the grease duct in Suite 207, the equipment is
not sensitive enough to measure the air leakage losses in the duct. After a call to Town
of Vail, it was determined the SMACNA test would not be performed. This resulted in
limiting the inspection to the puff test and visual inspection.
The puff test for leakage utilizes the same testing apparatus as that of the SMACNA test

effective for the horizontal portions of the grease duct where it can be expected that
liquid from the grease duct cleaning operations may lay in the bottom of the grease
duct and leak from the duct through any leakage locations.
During the puff test for the grease ducts in Suite 207, approximately six leaks were
found that required immediate welding repair. The puff test was performed three times
before all leaks were identified and repaired resulting in no leaks at the completion of
the site visit. These puff tests were performed on three separate small sections of grease
duct within Suite 207. The attached drawing (PDF) identifies these grease ducts in grey
line weight.
All three sections of grease duct are considered acceptable from a leakage
perspective. Subject to the puff test results as Special Inspector I find the grease
duct for Suite 207 approved from a leakage perspective.

SPECIAL INSPECTION SERVICES
GREASE DUCT

Future Tenant Grease Duct
PRELIMINARY
INTRODUCTION
Special inspection services of the grease ducts for the Solaris project included performing tests
to identify leakage of the grease duct where potential liquid leakage could occur as a result of
cleaning operations of the internal areas of the grease duct. It is the desire of both the Town of
Vail as well as the Solaris Ownership to avoid liquid leakage from the grease duct as a result of
cleaning the duct. These grease ducts are concealed within construction in most areas and
liquid leakage would be cause for potential water damage to the finish construction materials.
BACKGROUND
Testing for leakage of the grease ducts was performed in two ways. Testing was performed in
accordance with the HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual, 1985 Edition, as published by the
Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association, Inc. ( SMACNA). Testing
was also performed by utilizing smoke bombs along with the SMACNA test apparatus to identify
specific locations of leakage within the duct. This is also referred to as the "puff' test.
The SMACNA Leakage Test utilizes testing apparatus consisting of an airflow measuring
device, flow producing unit, pressure indicating devices and accessories necessary to connect
the metering system to the test specimen (grease duct). The testing apparatus used for these
grease duct leakage tests was a United McGill Standard Leak Detective Test Kit consisting of
the following:
• Calibrated orifice tube
• OSHA approved fan with an inlet damper control
• Two U -tube manometers
• Vinyl tubing
• Dye
• Adaptive Flex Duct
The differential pressure flow sensor for this test was a series SSS -1000 manufactured by KMC
Controls (www.kmccontrols.com). The leakage test is performed based on established leakage
limits for ducts. Test results identifying leakage greater than these established limits results in a
failed test for the duct.

Solaris Special Inspection Services PRELIMINARY
Grease Duct
Japanese Restaurant / Future Tenant
The puff test for leakage utilizes the same testing apparatus as that of the SMACNA test,
however, lit smoke bombs are added to the inside of the grease duct and the flow producing unit
is cycled on and off one or two times very quickly to push the smoke form the smoke bombs out
any leakage points in the grease duct. This makes the location of leaks very visible and easily
identified for repair. A single smoke bomb can last long enough for several cycles of the flow
producing unit. This is especially effective for the horizontal portions of the grease duct where it
can be expected that liquid from the grease duct cleaning operations may lay in the bottom of
the grease duct and leak from the duct through any leakage locations.
It was agreed by the Town of Vail to allow the Solaris project to perform leakage testing of the
grease ducts in phases to allow construction and subsequent concealment of the grease duct
with a final test of each grease duct in its entirety to verify the grease duct is within proper
leakage limits. As of the writing of this report neither the Japanese Restaurant grease duct nor
the Future Tenant grease duct are complete, thus, the identification PRELIMINARY at the top of
this report. Each of the grease ducts have been installed from the tenant area to the building
exit at the roof of the building. However, neither grease duct is complete within the tenant space
as the exact location of each appliance nor appliance hood is not known at this time. The tenant
finish work for the Japanese Restaurant and the Future Tenant spaces will identify exact
locations allowing for the grease duct serving each appliance and appliance hood to be
connected to the appropriate grease duct. A full test of the grease duct will be necessary upon
completion of the grease duct installation within each tenant space. At that time a final report
can be provided with final leakage testing results.
The isometric drawing of these grease ducts is attached. The tested and installed grease ducts
(Japanese and Future Tenant) is complete from the roof to just east of column line 10 on Level
2 of Solaris. The grease duct furthest south in the drawing is the Future Tenant grease duct.
The two grease ducts to the north of this are each for the Japanese Restaurant and make up
the grease duct for this tenant that will be utilizing two appliance hoods. The vertical portion of
the grease duct from the Theater is also shown in this drawing as each of these grease ducts
rise vertically through the building in individual shaft enclosures adjacent to each other. Grease
duct fans are located on the roof.
Numerous tests and associated dates were utilized in performing the leakage testing. Due to an
overlapping of sections tested, only the last leakage test if recorded for the entire (although
preliminary) grease ducts. A final test will need to be performed upon completion of the grease
duct to the appliance hood locations.
The final test grease duct surface area at this preliminary stage is 1,030 ft for the Japanese
Restaurant grease duct and 643 ft for the Future Tenant grease duct. Duct is considered
leakage class (C 12 duct as rectangular metal duct. The duct was tested at 2" w.g. pressure
from the testing apparatus for each test. The allowable leakage factor for the duct is 19
cfm /100ft This equates to 195.7 cfm of allowable leakage for the Japanese Restaurant grease
duct and 122.2 cfm of allowable leakage for the Future Tenant grease duct. Pressure across the
differential flow sensor measured 0.005 for the Japanese Restaurant grease duct and 0.007 for
the Future Tenant grease duct. This correlates to an actual leakage of less than 30 cfm for each
of the grease ducts. Therefore, leakage is acceptable in each grease duct.

Each grease duct also was tested utilizing the puff test. Several leaks were discovered as a
result of this testing. Repairs were either made immediately or between tests and retesting of
the duct utilizing the puff test was performed until no leaks were observed. This proved very
valuable in the great performance of the leakage test results.
Both the Japanese Restaurant grease duct and the Future Tenant grease duct are considered
acceptable from a leakage perspective. It is recommended that at the time of each tenant finish
with installation of appliance hoods and extension of each grease duct to respective hoods, that
each grease duct is tested again for final leakage testing and report.
Subject to the above results as Special Inspector I find the Japanese Restaurant grease duct
and the Future Tenant grease duct preliminarily approved from a leakage perspective.
