A harmonic is a frequency that is an � integral multiple of the fundamental frequency. The fundamental frequency is the frequency of the ! electrical network, 50/60 Hz. 7he term harmonic is used for both current and voltage distorti�ns. Chapter Measurement Results presents an example o� � the savings in fransforrrier heat lasses that can be achieved by using ACS550 wifh a Swinging Choke ` instead af a converter with a conventional choke. ; f z � THD , IS = IS, ' 1 + 100 ' � i � The standa�d ( EC 6100a-3-2 and the prospective standard IEC 6100D-3-12 only restrict #he amount ofi ; harmonics at norr�inal load but there are no resfrictions on harmonics at partial load . Every device 3 connected to the supply system is not operating at nominal [oad all the time, especial(y if it is a variable � speed drive. A variable speed drive is used just in order to adjusf speed and torqua and is therefore often 3 operafing at partial load. In rectifiers with conventional LC-filters, the harmonic content increases rapidly as the load decreases. The amplitude of the harmonic currents a[so decreases but their parC of the rms i current increases. By reducing #he harmonics at partial load, fhe harmonics in the whole supply systetn ; decreases. The Swinging Choke decreases the THD at partial loads because its inductance increases � when the load decreases. The size and weight of the 5winging Choke is the same as for a Conventional ; Choke. The onfy way it differs from a Conventional Choke is that its inductance changes according to the ; current through it. There ara also other benefits with a Swinging Choke. It reduces the peak line j current and the peak-to-peak DC bus ripple current especially at partial load conditions. The tatal i harmonic disiortion praduced by the device with a certain DC-capacitor bank depends directly on the � incfuctance of the chokes in the drive. Larger inductance gives IowerTHD. �th a Conventional Choke the � THD increases rapidfyas the load decreases because ifs inductance -is constant regardless of the load. : Because the inductance aP the Swinging Chake increases �as the load decreases it reduces the amount of ; THD at partial loads. ; To obtain a choke wifh non-linea� inductance, fhe form of fhe air gap is changed . In order to increase the ; inductanoe at smail currents, a "step" is introduced in the middle of the center post in the EI-core choke, ; Figure 3. When the current increases, #he "step" begins to saturate which reduces the inductance of the ; choke. Figure 4 shows how tf�e flux density is distributed in the choke when it is carrying a large current. It ! can be seen that the flux density in the "step" is very high and as a result of that, the parmeability of fhe ; iron in the step is almost the same as for air. The line harmonics are measured with a power analyzer using � current shunts. The current in all three phases is measured while the frequency converter is running in the � field-weakening region, 50 Hz. The active power and current drawn from the suppiy are measured. i The test setup for harmonic distortion measurements is shown in Figure 5. The value of the additiona) � inductance added to the 5upply system is chosen in order to adjust the short circuit power of the supply f and obtain a suitable value of short circuit ratio RS�� according to the prospective IEC 61000-3-'f2 � standard. The value of R5� should be above the minimum value 192 defined by the prospective IEC ; 61000-3-12 stanclard. This means #hat the value of the additional inductance depends on the rafed power 1 of the drive under test. The motor is loaded with a generator fhat is controlled with a regenerative drive, ; which transfers the energy to anather network thus not disturbing the harmonic measurements.
