Tom,
This is news to me as to why we are being asked to supply hoses, meters, and
nozzles for the fire department in the event they need to use the stand
pipes during construction.
Please advise if you intend to push back or if you want me to get the
pricing from Frontier for them to supply the materials.
I suspect timing is pretty short to make the decision.

Dave
Do you want me to purchase this equipment? We will be charging additional
cost for this equipment. Reference the comments below.
We are working on the other items. I had another conversation with Mike
McGee this morning and it looks like he is going to resend his requirement
to have the standpipe control valves accessible. I still need to talk to
Mike Vaughn (Vail Fire Marshall).

Subject: RE: Solaris Fire Standpipe Inspection
Steve,
I was trying to get the permit for the sprinklers out the door.
Now I find I am taking time out to deal with this.
I do not want to throw the AHJ card or discuss the NFPA definition of
"Approved" but valves that cannot be accessed aren't really of much use.
This building as you have so clearly pointed out, is somewhat complicated.
The ability to be able to isolate sections for repair and maintenance, drain
downs, and an occasional emergency, is essential.
The logistics of trying to get an extension ladder up the stairs are
difficult. I can only imagine some architect trying to waste time computing
the proper angle and rotation necessary to gat any specific length of a
ladder into a stair and around the corner.
Bottom line, access to the valves is required.
Second issue while we are at it; I had two engine companies go out and try
the flow meter. It works well. I also had them take the plans while I was
gone and scale out hose lengths from the fire hose valves to each room.
The conclusion of their assessment is the current configuration of stand
pipes, walls, corridors, interior stairs and related elements indicates it
will require a slightly different compliment of hoses and attachments that
we currently have in use.
I have verified the process and discussed it with the Chief of the
Department.
In order to be able to operate effectively with the current design, we are
requesting:
4 - 100 ft sections 2 1/2 inch diameter hose (Neidner XL 800)
4 - 100 ft sections 1 1/2 inch diameter hose (Neidner XL 800)
4 in-line flow meters (one of which we already have)
4 slug tip nozzles.
The main issue is we anticipate an exposure while the top floors are being
constructed prior to the fire sprinklers being activated. We estimate the
need to be able to place four lines into service, two from each direction.
Dave Leiker and Dan Feeney have been copied on this email.
Please advise us as to:
1. When the existing deficiencies have been corrected. I consider the temp
stand pipes to be minimum for Weitz to continue operations on site.
2. Where the isolations valves will be relocated to and any options you
wish us to consider. Valves shall be "readily accessible."
3. The expected delivery date of the necessary hose, flow meters, and
nozzles.
Thank you,
Michael McGee

We will take care of these problems right away.
We will need to schedule an afternoon next week to pressure test the
standpipe so we don't leave any water in the standpipe overnight. Could we
plan on Tuesday afternoon Dec. 2nd, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM?
Item #3 NFPA #14 does not require these valves to be located in the stair or
accessible from the floor (within 6" AFF). NFPA #14 sections 6.3.5 does not
require the valve to be located in the stair & 6.3.8.4 ask for a sign to
locate the sectional control valve when installed in a concealed space which
implies the section control valve can be installed in concealed spaces. The
standpipe sectional control valves are all accessible just outside of the
stair tower as shown on the shop drawings. Please reconsider this
requirement.

Subject: RE: Solaris Fire Sprinkler Permit
Greetings. I have just completed a walkthrough of the temp standpipes at
Solaris. Please note the following conditions found:
1. Connection access points are not approved. These connections need to be
outside the fence on both the Meadow Drive and Frontage road sides. Please
provide signage and ready access for their locations.
2. Sectional valves are not accessible. Please adjust your plan as too
allow for ready access from the floor or stair landing.
3. 200 lb hydro required on all temp standpipes. Please plan and advise as
to how you are going to accomplish this.
4. The Frontage road section of standpipe is blocked and in contact with a
temporary electrical power bank. This situation is to be corrected upon
reciept of notification. I will advise Weitz also.
5. Stairway two identification is inadequate (there is none). I will
advise Weitz as this is their issue, though I wanted all parties to be
aware. Thanks.
Please don't hesitate to call if you have questions. Thanks, Mike.

In reference to NFPA #20 Sections 5.14.6.3.1 and 5.14.3.1 see figure A5.14.6
where we comply with the requirement for 10 pipe diameters. I have also
attached a sketch of the fire pump where the suction supplies the fire pump.

The sprinkler portion seems to be fine.
I still have a concern on the supply to the fire pump.
It appears to violate NFPA 20, 5.14.6.3.1 - 5.14.6.3.2.
Both Prof's at OSU seem to agree.
Maybe the plans do not reflect the design?
If the room needs to be larger, they can move a wall. 80 inches should not
be a deal killer.

Have you completed your review on the revised fire sprinkler plans for
Solaris? We logged in the revised plans on 11-10-08.
We have completed the construction standpipe and need to start installing
the fire sprinkler system piping.
