Emergency egress windows will not be required in high rise applications. Martin A. Haeberle, C.B.O. Chief Building Official Town of Vail 75 South Frontage Road Vail, Colorado 81657 970.479.2142 (o) 970.479.2452 (f) 970.376.3672 (c) >>> Mike McGee 09/11/2008 8:24 AM >>> History aside, I am of the opinion rescue windows are not applicable in this project (Exception 5). The deletion of exception 1 has some background with respect to fire access. Cross ventilation in sprinklered buildings is very much a tactical option. Exception 4 is related to what we saw as a trend to install mechanical equip in "crawl spaces" (ie confined space as defined by OSHA and with some suspicion the space could be altered after the CO). >>> <Brian_Thompson@schirmereng.com> 09/10/2008 6:42 PM >>> Martin, Per our telephone conversation today, I am sending this request for clarification on the code requirement as enforced by Vail for emergency escape and rescue openings. 2003 IBC, Section 1025, requires these openings for Group R occupancies. However, exception 1 does not require them for buildings that are sprinklered and exception 5 does not require them for buildings that are considered high-rise buildings. TOV has amended this section by deleting in their entirety, exception 1 and 4. Since exception 5 has not been deleted by TOV amendments, are we allowed to not provide emergency escape and rescue openings for Solaris? Regards, Brian Thompson, P.E.
