Solaris elevators
Mike:
Here is the drawing which Davis Partnership (DPA) did for me on fitting
both the code required 24" x 76" stretcher in from Chapter 30 IBC, and a
diagram on fitting a 23" x 80" stretcher in. DPA has designed side
entry elevators for Elevators 1, 4 and 5, which makes stretcher entry
much easier. The 23" x 80" stretcher looks like it barely fits, but
with field conditions with finish materials, I don't know if I can be
100% sure. If ECHSD had to incline the stretcher to do CPR, it would be
by maybe a 10% incline which would work.
I was hot on the tracks of this issue at the very beginning of the
design & knew about the 24" x 76" requirement, so I kept the design team
on track with it to serve all floor areas/levels. We have Stryker prams
in Westminster too, so I need to measure ours to verify them, but I was
unaware they were bigger. Any other building BCER works in Vail will
have elevators that accommodate 25" x 84" stretchers (1" cushion on the
sides & 2" cushion on the ends). I will also be recommending a similar
code amendment in Westminster for our next code adoption.
Part of the precast concrete has already been ordered, so changing
elevator car sizes will have a nasty impact on the design at this late
stage. Please let me know your formal interpretation and I will proceed
with it with the design team, but it is desirable for the team to have
the current design of the elevators as they are shown in the drawing as
acceptable.
Thanks. Dave.

Hi Mike,
I had a nice conversation with Dave Leiker of BCER engineering regarding
elevator size at the Solaris project. Bottom line is that, while what
they have designed isn't what I would call "spacious", after looking
over some drawings with him, I think we can make it work.
As far as future projects in the TOV, Dave suggested that the ordinance
regarding elevator size should be amended to reflect a stretcher
dimension of 25"x84" (if you recall, our new stretchers are 23"x80") to
give us a little more working room, and to accomodate potential future
changes in patient-handling equipment sizes. I couldn't agree more.
Give me a call if you have any questions.
