This landscape project looks at revitalizing the health of existing trees through the removal of(2) large trees and (2) dwarf spruce that have out grown their surroundings. As the existing landscape had matured, the trees and groundcovers have come into competition for light and air resulting in insect problems and weakening the existing plants. Our goal is to allow more light and air into the landscape in order to sustain for future growth. The other aspects of this project are to install (2) year round water features. Before Mill Creek was diverted, it ran much closer to the Johnson residence. Part of our objective is to reinstate the sound of rushing water closer to the home. The streams will be built in the natural style of a mountain stream; many small moss rock boulders will be used alongside a few key signature boulders to accent the stream. Semi- aquatic plantings will dot the sides of the stream creating a calming setting. The pondless stream endings will seemingly dissolve into lush plantings. Careful attention to perennial placement and shrub plantings will create a juxtaposition to highlight the stream. The perennial and shrub plantings throughout the site will be placed to bring forward their full beauty. The project has been separated into two phases to accommodate our clienYs needs and work within the seasonal constraints. Phase 1 of this project looks at installing the stream that wraps around to the front of the building this year, weather permitting. The perennial and shrub plantings, along with the water feature in the rear of the building will be installed in Phase 2 which will occur in the spring of 2011. The overall intent of the design is to complement the existing house using moss rock and natural plant materials to reflect the natural mountain beauty indigenous to the Vail Valley.
