Asbestos Testing & Abatement Requirements
Asbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders from ex-
posure to harmful asbestos. The Town of Vail asbestos abatement program is in addition to the State of Colorado's regu-
lations. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for their requirements
at the contact info listed below.
When is asbestos testina reauired?
ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing:
One- and Two-Family Dwellings: 30 square feet
All Others: 160 square feet
Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.
Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State-certified and Vail-registered abate-
ment contractor. An asbestos abatement permit must be approved, and the clearance letter must be submitted to the
Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued

Tips & Facts:
• Even recent construction projects may include asbestos-containing materials, so buildings of � age require testing.
• The "1989 Ban" on asbestos-containing materials is commonly misunderstood. "In fact, in 1991 the U.S. Fifth Circuit
Court of Appeals vacated much of the so-called "Asbestos Ban and Phaseout" rule and remanded it to the EPA. Thus,
much of the original 1989 EPA ban on the U.S. manufacturing, importation, processing, or distribution in commerce
of many asbestos-containing product categories was set aside and did not take effect." - CDPHE

STRUCTURAL SPECIFICATIONS
1) All foundation around perimeter of structure shall have minimum frost protection
of 48" to bottom of footing.
2) All lumber shall be Dou�-Fir #2 S4S or better, all wolmanized lumber shall be
Hem-Fir #2 S4S or better (all lumber within 18" of finish grade or in contact with
concrete must be wolmanized). Provide solid blocking at 8'-0" on center in all
diaphragms. All columns to be continuous bearing to foundation
3) Alaska Yellow Cedar Glulam materials, manufacture and quality control shall
conform to STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR STRUCTURAL GLUED
LAMINATED T[MBER OF SOFTVJOOD $PECIES, AITC ] 17-2004 and
TIMBER CONSTRUCTION MANUAL (5°i edition) as prepared by ATTC .
Simple span beams shall be Combination Symbol 24F-V4 with no camber.
Continuous or cantilevered beams shall be Combination symbol 24F-V8 with no
camber. Glulam columns shall be Combination Symbol 3. Adhesives shall
conform to the requirements for wet conditions of service.
4) Structural steel shall be ASTM A36 or better, anchor bolts and bolts shall be
A307 or better. All structural stee] is to be detailed, fabricated, painted and
erected in accordance with AISC STEEL CONSTRUCTION MANUAL, 200_5
and CODE OF STANDARD PRACTICE. All welding to be performed by a
certified welder and conform to AISC and AWS STRUCTLJR.AI, Vl-'ELDING
CODE, 2000, all electrodes to be EE-70XX . Grout beneath all base plates and
beam bearin� plates shall be non-shrink epoxy with minimum 28 day compressive
strength of 5000 psi. All Epoxy Anchors to be installed according to
manufacturer's specifications and details.

adopted by the Town of Vail Building Department and the "General Conditions of
the Contract for Construction° �AIA Document A201). All construction must be
completed witl�in the tolerances described in the "Residential Construction
Performance Guidelines" as pr<�pared by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
HOME BUILDERS.
