The purpose of this letter is to summarize our additional interior slab -on -grade recommendations for the proposed fire station. At the time of our initial observation, the soils observed at the interior slab -on -grade elevation consisted of a natural, red, brown, moist to very moist, soft to medium stiff, sandy, silty clay with scattered gravels and existing fill. The existing fill is characterized by a black, brown, moist to very moist, soft to medium stiff, sandy clay with organics. Structures constructed over uncontrolled fill will always have a risk of movement. The level of risk for structures constructed on uncontrolled fill will primarily depend on the type of fill, how long the fill has been in place, new loading conditions on the fill, whether the existing fill has been exposed to water, depth of uncontrolled fill, and how the fill was placed. At this site, the existing fill has been in place for some tune, the fill is moist to very moist and therefore has been exposed to water, and the loading on the fill will not significantly increase. Therefore, in our opinion, interior slabs -on -grade supported by 3 feet of properly moisture treated and compacted structural fill underlain by a geotextile will have a slightly moderate to moderate risk of movement. The geotextile must be placed on the existing fill or natural soft, moist soils prior to the placement of granular structural fill. The geotextile may consist of a Miraf HP570 or equivalent. The structural fill may consist of clean crushed rock, base course, or other granular soils. All structural fill must be placed and compacted as recommended in our geotechnical report titled "Geotechnical Report, Proposed West Vail Fire Station, 2399 North Frontage Road West, Vail, Colorado" dated August 6, 2009. We appreciate the opportunity to provide this service. If we can be of further assistance on this or any other geotechnical matter, please contact our office. X11,,, . Vail, Colorado. The purpose of this letter is to summarize our additional foundation recommendations for the proposed fire station. At the time of our observation, the soils observed in the foundation excavation consisted of a natural, red, brown, mo ist to very moist, soft to medium stiff, sandy, silty clay with scattered gravels. Due to the presence of soft, moist soils at the footing elevation, it is our opinion that the soils exposed in the base of the foundation excavation will need to be stabilized. We recommend removing a portion of the soft, moist soil from beneath footings and replacing them with a granular structural fill. The structural fill may consist of clean crushed rock, base course, or other granular soils. The amount of natural soils to be removed and replaced will be partially dependent upon the structural fill being used and should be determined in the field by performing a test section. If the natural soils cannot be stabilized by removing and replacing 18 inches of material, the use of a geotextile below the structural fill should be considered. The geotextile below the structural fill may consist of a Mirafi HP570 or equivalent. The structural fill should be placed and compacted in accordance with the recommendations presented in our geotechnical report, dated August 6, 2009. We appreciate the opportunity to provide this service. If we can be of further assistance on this or any other geoteclinieal matter, please contact our office.
