We have reviewed the existing roof structure over the main living area and found that it does not meet current code requirements for snow load capacity. We offer the following options: 1. I.eave the roof structure as is and do not extend the new kitchen wall to the west, below the existing roof eave. Since we will not be altering the existing structure in any way, it can remain as originally built. 2. Leave the roof structure as is and extend the new kitchen wall to the west, adding the header beam as indicated on the attached roof framing plan. This will not alter any of the existing roof structure, but will interfere with the proposed window and overhead � cabinet layout. 3. Extend the kitchen wall to the west, adding a header over the new exterior window � location and reinforcing the existing roof purlins to span the extra distance to the new header. Since we are now altering existing roof inembers, they will have to be reinforced to meet cunent snow load requirements. This also implies that the remainder of the roof must be brought up to cunent code standards. See the attached roof framing plan for our recommendations regarding reinforcement of the existing roof. Decking shall have heavy tongue and groove ends and edges. e. All pieces shall be certified by an independent inspection agency (TECO or SPIB). f. Laminating adhesive shall meet requirements of ASTM D 2559-66T, exterior waterproof type. Moisture content of wood shall not exceed 14% maximum at the time of manufacture. Protect decking from damage or exposure to excessive moisture prior to and during construction. g. Apply decking in random length continuous lay-up according to the manufacturer's specifications. Nail each course to a supporting member with two nails. Each course should be toenailed to the tongue side of the adjacent course at an angle of approximately 45°, starting within one foot of the end of each piece. Toenail at 30" centers, staggering locations in adjacent courses. Delay painting within 3" of field welds until welds are completed. BACKFILLING: a. Do not backfill against retaining walls until supporting elements are in place and securely anchored, or adequate shoring is installed. Concurrent backfilling of each side of a retaining wall to final grades as indicated on plan or sections is required unless temporary shoring is installed. b. Verify type of fill with soils engineer and structural engineer prior to backfilling. GROUT: a. All grout beneath column base plates and steel beams at bearing shall be non- shrink, non-metallic type grout. Grout shall have a minimum compressive strength of 2500 psi. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: ' a. Structural erection and bracing: The structural drawings illustrate the completed structure with all elements in their final positions, properly supported - and braced. The contractor, in the proper sequence, shall provide shoring and bracing as may be required during construction to achieve the final completed structure. Contact structural engineer for consultation (not in contract) as required. b. Existing structures: If construction adjoins an existing structure, contractor shall be responsible for verifying dimensions, elevations, framing, foundations and anything else that may affect the work shown on the drawings. Underpinning, shoring and bracing of existing structures shatl be the responsibility of the contractor. c. Dimensions: Check all dimensions against architectural drawings prior to construction. Do not scale drawings. d. Construction practices: General contractor is responsible for means, methods, techniques, sequences and procedures for construction of this project.
