Dear: Mike: INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to provide a formal written engineering analysis regarding the heat transfer from the new fireplace into the floor /ceiling assembly below for the Park Meadows Lodge at 1472 Matterhorn Circle in Vail, Colorado. Any material or combination of layers of materials develop a certain temperature profile when there are differences in surface temperatures at different locations. It is these temperature profiles that need to be known for the design of a floor /ceiling assembly below a fireplace to avoid reaching ignition temperatures of combustible construction material in the floor /ceiling assembly or any items attached above or below it. It is also important to develop what the localized temperatures of steel components of the construction to avoid reaching temperatures associated with the structural failure for steel. PROPOSED FIREPLACE & FLOOR /CEILING CONSTRUCTION The diagram below shows the proposed construction detail of the new fireplace and floor /ceiling assembly below. Horizontal dimensions of floor /ceiling elements and sizing of structural beams are omitted pending the analysis of this report. These dimensions are presented later in this report. Most dimensions used for calculations are given in metric, since that is what the Park Meadows Lodge, Vail, Colorado Engineering Jheat Transfer Analysis Submittal, New Fireplace BCER Engineering, #607 09 001.00 June 26, 2009 Page 2 computer software uses. These dimensions are converted to feet - inches or degrees Fahrenheit where appropriate to associate the reader with units they are familiar with. Since horinzontal dimensions of this section were not known prior to the analysis in this report, the TBD (To Be Determined) and ? ?? symbols depict values determined by this report. The two sectional elevations of the fireplace and floor /ceiling assembly is also shown below. HEAT TRANSFER ANALYSIS & ASSUMPTIONS The heat transfer analysis for the condition present on this project was conducted by using a computer program model called FEHT (Finite Element Heat Transfer), Version 7.203. FEHT is a viable option for heat transfer problems that can be anayzed on a two dimensional (2 -D) basis, as is the case for this project. The FEHT model allows for the input of dimensions from a cross - section of the proposed construction. Thermal properties of the materials present are also input into the model. The thermal properties of the materials identified in the section drawings above were obtained from the Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer (5th edition), by Incropera and DeWitt. These properties were also verified in other references such as, An Introduction to Fire Dynamics (2nd edition), By Drysdale, Structural Design for Fire Safety, by Buchanan, and Enclousre Fire Dynamics, by Karlsson and Quintiere. Also entered in the the FEHT program were convective heat transfer coeffficient values from the above references. A convective heat transfer coefficient (h) of 5 W /m -K was used for floor and ceiling surfaces not subject to convective air flow caused by the fireplace combustion process. A convective heat transfer coefficient (h) of 10 W /m -K was used for the raised horizontal surface surrounding the fireplace which is subject to slight convective air flow caused by the fireplace combustion process. Higher convective heat transfer coefficients are used in other applications. A component of radiative heat transfer from room surfaces was also considered using a conservative emissivity factor (epsilon) of 0.7 from the above references. The horizontal floor surface in the fireplace were assumed to have temperatures near the adiabatic flame temperature of most fuel gases, which is 1,600 ° K (2,420 0 F). The vertical wall surface in the fireplace were assumed to have temperatures near the adiabatic flame temperature of most fuel gases, which is 937 ° K (1,227 ° F). These temperatures are conservatively high and neglect the cooling effects of convective, make -up air currents present in the fireplace. ANALYSIS RESULTS The FEHT input model grid is shown below both for the wide -grid and narrow -grid cases. i ...... Park Meadows Lodge, Vail, Colorado June 26, 2009 Engineering Jheat Transfer Analysis Submittal, New Fireplace Page 6 BCER Engineering, #607 09 001.00 • Dark Blue: 2 -inch flagstone flooring • Dark Gray: Concrete flooring above the metal floor pan • Aqua Blue: Adaptation /Simplification of the metal floor plan and supporting beam • Greenish Brown: Adaptation /Simplification of the wood flooring system Simplification assumptions of flooring support beams /trusses /joists were necessary since the cross - section of the FEHT model depended on the location of the section and whether or not support beams were present. To compensate for this a thicker uniform steel or wood layer was assumed. The layer is thicker to provide a conservative route for heat to dissipate horizontally. The FEHT model result for the temperature profile contours in degress Kelvin ( ° K) are shown below both for the wide -grid and narrow -grid cases. Temperatures ranged from 300 ° K (80 ° F) to 1,600 ° K (2,420 ° F). Again, note the narrow -grid temperature profile contours are smoother and more accurate. By grouting in the concrete block we provide a better route to dissipate heat horizontally through the fireplace wall and limit a little of the heat transfer downward into the floor. The 560 ° K temperature imposed of the bottom of the floor /ceiling assembly below the center of the fireplace, corresponds to a temperature of 549 ° F. The failure criteria for the ASTM E 119 test is an average temperature of the steel of 538 degrees Celsius (1000 ° F) or a maximum temperature of 649 degrees Celsius (1200 ° F) measured at any point on the beam. Given the maximum 549 ° F temperature shown in the above temperature contour, failure of steel components in the floor /ceiling assemebly is not an issue. The 300 ° K temperatures (normal room temperature of around 70 -80 ° F) shown to the right -side of the diagram is no where near the ignition temperatures of the transition point to the wood flooring assemblies. A similar means of showing the different temperatures across the cross - section of the the fireplace is to some the temperatures at each node point in the FEHT model. For the wide - grid model few nodes are used, so the temperatures at the nodes are easier to read. For the narrow -grid mode many nodes are used, so the temperatures at the nodes overlap each other and clutter the output. The node temperatures are shown in the two diagrams below. x+20 c" 300.0 M 560.0 M 820.0 M 1080 E:1 13411 Q I G(X) K xa it ias i2at » Park Meadows Lodge, Vail, Colorado June 26, 2009 Engineering Jheat Transfer Analysis Submittal, New Fireplace Page 9 BCER Engineering, #607 09 001.00 File:C: FEHT321Park Meadows Lodge in Vail\Park Meadows 2 h.FET Ver. X7.203 6/25/2009 1:54:13 PM #1878: For use only by David Leiker. BCER Engineering, Inc., Arvada, CO As we can see in the diagram above the vast majority of the heat transfer occurs downward from the fireplace and dissipates from the ceiling area below the fireplace. Much less heat moves horizontally across the floor beyond the edge of the fireplace. For this reason, it is critical the fireplace have a means of dissipating heat in a downward flow and not be located on top of a combustible floor /ceiling assembly. Some general design features of the fireplace design should include: • The floor /ceiling assembly supporting the fireplace needs to be constructed with non- combustible construction. In this case the temperatures directly below the center of the fireplace are 549 °F, which is below the yield failure temperature of the supporting steel floor structure but within the range of causing pyrolysis or ignition of wood or other combustible materials. The underside of the ceiling below the fireplace needs to remain open to the air in some manner to dissipate heat. The underside of the ceiling should definitely not have and fireproofing material (spray - applied, gypsum wall board, etc.) insulating it. It should not have any combustible material attached to it. If the floor /ceiling assembly needs to maintain a fire - resistance rating (FRR), then other options need to be developed. If a suspended ceiling is installed, some form of air circulation needs to be considered. Although most heat transfer occurs directly down from the fireplace, an adequate thickness of fire brick allows for some heat transfer horizontally. Also, grouting in the open air cells of concrete blocks assists in horizontal heat transfer. • The transition from the steel /concrete flooring system to the wood flooring system needs to occur some distance away from the fireplace. In this case, the transition point needs to [.a-20c" —i 7.8011 o. 7512 W /m2 Park Meadows Lodge, Vail, Colorado Engineering Jheat Transfer Analysis Submittal, New Fireplace BCER Engineering, #607 09 001.00 June 26, 2009 Page 10 be at least 4 feet horizontally from the bottom of the fireplace bottom or 2 feet horizontally from the fireplace outer wall The "TBD" dimension noted on the first diagram in this report corresponds to the "2 feet horizontally from the fireplace outer wall" noted in the line above. It would be acceptable to extned the non - combustible steel /concrete floor /ceiling construction further than this distance if needed to line up with other support members. CONCLUSION The installation as proposed by the Architect performs adequately to dissipate heat safely with the desing limitations identified in this report. If the design is altered from what is shown, then the design needs to be reassessed to make sure heat from the fireplace is safely dissipated. There are other design options available for additional design options not discussed in this report. Personnel of the Park Meadows Lod have indicated that there was a chimney fire that affected the roof over the main lobby of the Lodge sometime during the month of November 2007. According to Lodge personnel, the original construction took place m1967. Per your request we performed a site visit to observe the condition of the framing on August 13, 2008. The purpose of the review was t provide an opinion of the structural adequacy of the existing framing members. During our site visit we observed that a small portion of the 3x6 double tongue -and - groove planks had been damaged and/or removed from the area around the chimney and ridge column. The existing heavy timber framing members that extend from the ridge column down to the exterior walls were darkened u some areas, but otherwise intact. It was not clear if this darkening was the result of intentional wood stain or from smoke damage. Per our conversations with Martin Haeberle, the Chief Building Official for the Town of Vail, on August 20, 2008 it is acceptable and sufficient to restore the roof structure to its ori ginal state prior to the fire. Based on our review of the observed framing conditions, it is our opinion that the areas darkened by the fire have not been structurally impacted to affect the structural integrity of the heavy timber members. The tongue -and- groove portions of the roof that were removed should be replaced with members of structural strength equal to or greater than the damaged planks. Areas cosmetically affected may also be replaced at the owner's option. No other framing than that described above has been reviewed. I hope this provides the information you requested. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. Our findings, conclusions and recommendations are provided in this report. RMG Engineers should be made aware of subsequent changes to the excavation. This report presents geotechnical engineering recommendations for the design and construction of the addition foundation. The following is excluded from the scope of this report including but not limited to geologic, natural and environmental hazards such as landslides, unstable slopes, seismicity, snow avalanches, water flooding, corrosive soils, erosion, radon, wild fire protection, hazardous waste and natural resources. Subsurface Materials: The subsurface materials exposed in the excavations consisted of a thin veneer (approximately 1 inch or less) of brown, silty, fine sand overlying brown to gray igneous bedrock. Groundwater was not observed in the excavations. Moisture: Dry. Expansion Potential: Low. Foundation Recommendations At the time of our observation, four foundation excavations four feet by four feet in plan dimensions were formed. The depths of the excavations were approximately 3 to 4 inches below surrounding grade; however, the formed depth of the foundations was 12 inches. Based upon our review of Sheet S 1 dated July 10, 2009 by REI Structural Engineers, we understand the shallow foundations were designed using a maximum allowable bearing pressure 2910 Austin Bluffs Parkway 202 Main Street, Suite #22 910 Nottingham Road, Suite N12 Colorado Springs, CO 80918 P.O. Based upon the materials observed in the foundation excavations, a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 2,000 psf is suitable for design of the foundations. Backfill In areas where fill soils will not support structural components excavations may be backfilled with on -site materials. Backfill should be compacted by mechanically, moisture conditioned to facilitate compaction (usually within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content) and compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by the modified Proctor test, ASTM D- 1557. To verify the condition of the compacted soils, density tests should be performed during placement. The first density tests should be conducted when 18 inches of fill have been placed. Structural Fill Floor slabs, foundations and other structural components should be supported by structural fill. Areas to receive structural fill should have topsoil, organic material, or debris removed. The surface should be scarified and moisture conditioned to facilitate compaction (usually within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content) and compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by the Modified Proctor test, ASTM D -1557, prior to placing new structural fill. It is not necessary to scarify and moisture condition the intact bedrock materials. Structural fill should be placed in thin lifts not to exceed 6 inches after compaction, moisture conditioned to facilitate compaction (usually within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content) and compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by the Modified Proctor test, ASTM D -1557. The placement and compaction of structural fill should be observed and tested by the RMG during construction. Imported materials should be approved by RMG prior to hauling to the site. To verify the conditions of the compacted soil, density tests should be performed during placement. The first density tests should be conducted when 18 inches of fill have been placed. Concrete: Type I /II cement is recommended for concrete in contact with the subsurface materials. Calcium chloride should be used with caution for subsurface materials with high sulfate contents. The concrete should not be placed on frozen ground. If placed during periods of cold temperatures, the concrete should be kept from freezing. This may require covering the concrete with insulated blankets and heating. Concrete work should be completed in accordance with the latest applicable guidelines and standards published by ACI and PCA. If your gas supply is not natural gas, you must install ON /OFF Safety Valve /Pilot Kit (see Accessories, page 19). Call dealer where you bought log set. If the fireplace does not have a gas supply shutoff valve, one must be installed. VENTING SPECIFICATIONS FOR INSTALLATION The fireplace chimney flue and vent must be draft- ing properly. To check the vent for proper drafting: Light a tightly rolled newspaper on one end and place it at the inside front edge of the fireplace. Observe the smoke and be sure the vent is properly drawing it up the chimney. If the smoke spills out into the room, extinguish the flame and remove any obstruction until proper venting is achieved. The chimney flue must remain open a minimum of 3" at all times during the operation of this log set. For Massachusetts Residents Only Installation of this vented gas log set in the Com- monwealth of Massachusetts requires the damper be permanently removed or welded in the fully open position. INSTALLING DAMPER CLAMP Secure the damper stop clamp provided to the leading edge of the damper as shown in Figure 3. If for any reason this clamp doesn't work on your fireplace, another suitable clamp or permanent stop must be installed, or the damper blade must be cut or removed. Damper Clamp Damper r ` ` Damper Clamp Manufactured Fireplace Figure 3 - Attaching Damper Clamp CONNECTING TO GAS SUPPLY A WARNING: A qualified ser- vice person must connect log set to gas supply. Follow all local codes. Installation Items Needed Before installing log set, make sure you have the items listed below. • piping (check local codes) • sealant (resistant to Propane /LP gas) • equipment shutoff valve • test gauge connection • adjustable (crescent) wrench or pliers • sediment trap • tee joint • pipe wrench A CAUTION: Use only new, black iron or steel pipe. Inter- nally- tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas. Check your local codes. Use pipe of 1/2" diameter or greater to allow proper gas volume to log set. If pipe is too small, undue loss of volume will occur. Installation must include a equipment shutoff valve, union, and plugged 1 /8" NPT tap. Locate NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook tip. N1 tap must be upstream from log set (see Figure 4, page 8). IMPORTANT.' Install equipment shutoff valve in an accessible location. The equipment shutoff valve is for turning on or shutting off the gas to the appliance. Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NIT threads. This will prevent excess sealant from going into pipe. Excess sealant in pipe could result in a clogged burner injector. A WARNING: Use pipe joint sealant that is resistant to liquid petroleum (LP) gas. 901265 -01 Q www.desatech.com Masonry Fireplace INSTALLATION Continued We recommend that you install a sediment trap in supply line as shown in Figure 4. Locate sediment trap where it is within reach for cleaning. Install in piping system between fuel supply and heater. Locate sediment trap where trapped matter is not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moisture and contaminants. This keeps them from going into log set controls. If sediment trap is not installed or is installed wrong, log set may not rum properly. WARNING: Never check for gas leaks with open flame. 2. Light the burner with the shutoff valve no more than half open and holding a match slightly in front of the pan (see Lighting Instructions, page 14). 3. Inspect all connections for bubbles, raw gas odor, or flame from any area other than the burner (leaks). If leaks are detected, shut off the gas valve immediately. Tighten, or reas- semble the loose connection(s) using pipe joint compound until burner system is leak free. 4. When the burner is tested and leak free, observe the individual tongues of flame on the burner. Note: The burner design includes more ports on the outside of the bar. Make sure that all ports are clear and producing flame evenly across the burner. If any ports appear blocked, clear them by removing the burner manifold and reaming the ports with a modified paper clip or other suitable tool. 5. When finished testing, turn the gas shutoff valve OFF to extinguish all flames. ADDING PAN MATERIAL 1. Open the bag of ash bed material (vermiculite) and spread it evenly across the burner pan to the top. You may overflow the front and sides of the pan to cover the entire pan and connecting hardware. Do not cover GA9050A or GA9150A valve. 2. Open the glowing embers and evenly cover the ash bed material (vermiculite) in the burner pan. INSTALLING THE GRATE AND LOGS 1.
