Attached is the report for the asbestos survey and bulk sampling of suspected asbestos-
containing building materials at 740A Sandy Lane, Vail, Colorado.
This investigation was conducted on behalf of and for the exclusive use of Ms. Beth
Plzak (client), solely for use in a limited asbestos survey of the property. This report and
the findings herein shall not, in whole or in part, be disseminated or conveyed to any
other party, nor used by any other party, in whole or in part, without prior written consent
of Boulder Environmental Management.
The results of this survey are limited to materials that were assessable and foreseeable.
Additional materials may exist behind hard surfaces. Personnel knowledgeable of
asbestos containing materials should always oversee demolition activities. Demolition
work should be halted and sampling performed by a state of Colorado licensed building
inspector if additional materials, which are suspected of containing asbestos, are
encountered.

utilizing polarized light microscopy (PLM).

Discussion:
Sample analyses results are reported in percentages of asbestos and non-asbestos
components. The EPA defines any material that contains greater than one percent (1%)
asbestos, utilizing PLM, as being an asbestos containing material. Materials that are
identified as "none detected" are specified as not containing asbestos.
Conclusion:
The materials sampled in this study do not contain asbestos. The results of this
survey pertain only to materials tested. The laboratory reports supporting these findings
above are attached.

At the request of Mr. Jeff Erickson, on Thursday, May 14, 2009, we visited the
construction site at 740A Sandy Lane, Town of Vail, Eagle County, Colorado. The
purpose of our site visits was to observe and test the soil exposed in the foundation excavation
for the proposed garage addition. The proposed addition is located to the east of the existing garage.
The excavation consisted of a bench, about 10 feet by 30 feet. The cuts were about 4 to
5 feet below the existing grade. The bottom of the excavation was also below the bottom of the
foundation of the existing garage and residence. The soil exposed at the bottom of the
excavation consisted of sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders.
They encountered water at the bottom of the excavation. There was a pump dewatering the
excavation at the time of our site visit. They placed gravel and cobble size rocks to improve the
bottom of the excavation. The soil exposed in the foundation excavation for the addition is suitable
for the designed maximum allowable soil bearing pressure of1000 psi
The bottom of the excavation must be kept free of standing water during the construction
and curing period of the concrete foundation.
They should backfill the foundation and other under-slab fill with suitable material
approved by the engineer, compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the maximum standard
Proctor density (ASTM D-698). Suitable material should be free from topsoil, organics and rock
fragm;,:,ts greater tr.an 3 :nche�.
The concrete slab should be constructed over a 4-inch layer of clean gravel consisting of
-3/4 inch gravel with at least 50% retained on the No.4 sieve and less than 3 percent passing the
No. 200 sieve.
They should reinforce the concrete slab-on-grade and score control joints according to
the American Concrete Institute requirements and per the recommendations of the designer to
reduce damage due to shrinkage. The concrete slab should be separated from the foundation
walls and columns with expansion joints to allow for independent movement without causing
damage.
Foundation walls retaining earth and retaining structures that are laterally supported
should be designed to resist an equivalent fluid density of 50 pcf for an "at-rest" condition.
Laterally unrestrained structures, retaining the on-site earth, should be designed to resist an
equivalent fluid density of 30 pcf for the "active" case. The above design recommendations assume
drained backfill conditions and a horizontal backfill surface. Surcharge loading due to adjacent

construction materials and equipment, inclined backfill and hydrostatic pressure due to
undrained backfill should be incorporated in the design.
Exterior backfill should be compacted at or near the optimum moisture content to at least
95% of the maximum standard Proctor density under pavement, sidewalk and patio areas and to
at least 90% of the maximum standard Proctor density under landscaped areas. They should use
mechanical methods of compaction. Do not puddle the foundation excavation.
The site surrounding the building structure should slope away from the building in all
directions. A minimum of 12 inches in the frst 10 feet is recommended in unpaved areas, and
three inches in the first 10 feet in paved areas. The top of the granular foundation backfill should
be covered with a minimum of 1 foot of relatively impervious fll to reduce the potential of
surface water infiltrating the foundation subsoils.
Surface water naturally draining toward the proposed building site should be diverted
around and away from it by means of drainage swales or other approved methods. The roof
drains and down spouts should extend and discharge beyond the limits of the backfill.
This report has been prepared according to locally accepted professional geotechnical
engineering standards. There is no other warranty either expressed or implied.
