Regarding your message from yesterday Warren, I believe that our back door is what was designated as a second entrance, justifying the second sign. It is used as a group entrance for certain parties and remains unlocked during operating hours, though we do not use it as a publicized entrance or exit during our regular season. You are permitted a maximum of a single six square foot business identification sign per each public entry. You currently have two business identification signs as your initial sign permit application identified that there would be two public entries. Staff has recently visited your site and found that one of the public entries was not open and did not appear to be "customarily used or intended for use by the general public" as there was seating configured just inside the door. You stated in a n email to me that it is unlocked and used for group functions, but is not publicized/utilized as your customary or secondary entrance or exit during the regular season. Staff has interpreted a public entry as an access point to a business which is open during business hours and is identified as a means for entry and exit of that business at all times. I believe the requirements to retain the second business identification sign are not being met and therefore a single business identification sign should be utilized or the second public entry become a "customarily used or intended for use by the general public". I recognize that your space is of a shape/layout which would benefit from additional signage so I have some suggestions. You could install the awning sign as proposed as your business identification sign and then utilize window signage to identify the space and direct people around the corner to your patio and customary entrance utilized by the general public. Window signage is permitted to be 15% of the window area with a size not to exceed six square feet. There have been some businesses in Vail which have utilized window signage in a tasteful and elegant manor to obtain visibility and direct the general public to an entrance which may not be visible from certain locations. I have seen vinyl applications which appear as frosted glass when applied to the window. Your establishment could utitize window sign to identify the Vail Chop House and through directional arrows or verbiage could direct people to your patio entrance. With regard to your awning sign application I would like to request that you have your sign designer measure the size of the sign utilizing no more than two polygons as stated in Section 11-5-4 sign measurement. The polygon should be done to scale and the scale identified so I can confirm that the sign is six square feet or less. It appears after calculating the size based on the dimensions provided that you will meet this requirement, however, the dimensions given result in three polygons being utilized. I look forward to working with you on your application and would be happy to meet you on site to discuss options which are available. I will be out of the office April 20 through the 24th and back in the office on the 25th. I can be reached at this email address or by phone at 970-479-2148.
