Boyle Engineering Group 1650 Fallridge Road Vail, CO 81657 Re: 11 7/8" BCI 90 Series Joist End Reaction Capacity 352A Beaver Dam Circle Vail, CO Boise Cascade Per your request, we evaluated the end reaction capacity of 11 7/8" BCI 90 series roof joists at the above referenced address. The scope of our work was to provide a BCI joist end reaction capacity from the attached proposed detail, as designed by your office. No other structural components as shown in this proposed detail were evaluated by Boise Cascade. Per our review, the attached proposed BCI joist end bearing condition is acceptable provided that the bent steel plate was designed to support the full reaction load. The joist reaction capacity can be determined by the length of solid bearing beyond the existing 2'/2' slotted bottom flange. For 11 7/8" BCI 90 series joists, the maximum allowable end reaction for a 3 %2' bearing length, with proper web stiffeners each face, is 1950 lbs. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any other information. Sincerely, Ne- Jeff A. Sexton, Engineered Wood Products Boise Building Materials Distribution p FE C IE U IN IE AUG 15 LUI1 TOWN OF VAIL T. Boyle Engineering, Inc. 1650 Fallridge Road, Unit C -2 Vail, Colorado 81657 970/476 -2170 August 14, 2012 TOWN OF VAIL BUILDING DEPT. Att: Martin Haeberle 75 S. Frontage Road West Vail, Colorado 81657 Subject: Roof Rafter Notch 352A Beaver Dam Circle Remodel Vail, Colorado Dear Martin: This is to confirm that I have discussed the situation at the above noted remodel where the framer has notched the bottom flange of the BCI rafter with Jeff Sexton from the engineering department of the regional Boise Cascade office. Essentially he stated that Boise Cascade would stand behind their product if we provided 3 %2" of bearing under these rafter ends beyond the 2 %Z" notched zone. I designed the attached detail to provide this bearing length. I have reviewed this installation in the field and found that it was implemented according to said detail. The web stiffeners were previously installed by the framer. As such, these rafters are capable of achieving the maximum reaction capacity of 1950 pounds as stated in Jeff Sexton's 8 -14 -12 letter. Coincidentally, this is the actual end reaction that these rafters would have under a full 100 psf snow load. I hereby approve of this installation of the bent plate as installed. Furthermore, I have determined that these rafters will support the 100 ps requirement as installed. Please give me a call if you have any questions or comments on this ,OD0 / /X_ Sincerely y A President TOWN OF VAIC" Department of Community Development 75 South Frontage Road Vail, CO 81657 Tel: 970 - 479 -2128 www.vailgov.com Development Review Coordinator TRANSMITTAL FORM Revision Submittals: 1. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for their requirements at the contact info listed below. When is asbestos testing required? ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing: One- and Two - Family Dwellings: 32 square feet All Others (commercial spaces, hotel rooms, etc): 160 square feet Definition of a single - family dwelling: any dwelling unit that is used primarily for a single family, including multi - family /condominium units, and fractional fee units. Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit. Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State - certified abatement contractor. The air clearance letter or form must be submitted to the Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued. Project Checklist My project falls into the category checked below: Will not disturb more than the threshold limits identified above. 0 Tested negative, or at 1% or below (1 copies of test results included) ❑ Tested positive at more than 1 %, requires abatement (1 copies of test results included) Tips & Facts: Even recent construction projects may include asbestos - containing materials, so buildings of gny age require testing. • The "1989 Ban" on asbestos - containing materials is commonly misunderstood. "In fact, in 1991 the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated much of the so- called "Asbestos Ban and Phaseout" rule and remanded it to the EPA. Thus, much of the original 1989 EPA ban on the U.S. manufacturing, importation, processing, or distribution in commerce of many asbestos - containing product categories was set aside and did not take effect." - CDPHE Asbestos test results should be submitted to: Town of Vail, Community Development, 75 S Frontage Rd, Vail, CO, 81657. Project: 352 A Beaver Dam Circle, Vail, Colorado Asbestos Sampling Report — Page 1 of 2 April 18, 2011 Claes Holm Holm Construction, Inc. On April 13, 2011, Quentin Danziger conducted an asbestos inspection of the suspect materials that will be affected by a planned remodel. Asbestos was NOT found, as described below. Homogenous Area Description Number of Samples % Asbestos Square Feet Type /Friable? 01 Texture 3 Non Detect 02 Sheetrock/JC 3 Non Detect 03 External Wall Texture 3 Non Detect [64-- Roof Membrane 3 Non Detect BACKGROUND: A remodel is planned. Indoor Environmental Services was requested to conduct an asbestos inspection of the suspect materials that have been affected, as determined by the contractor. This inspection includes only suspect materials that are visible to the inspector. If other suspect materials become visible during demolition, they must be sampled before they are disturbed. Examples of suspect materials include but are not limited to: linoleum, floor tile, ceiling tile, mastic, sheetrock, joint compound, roofing materials, etc. There are over 3000 known asbestos containing materials. SAMPLING PLAN: Colorado State Requirements - For each homogenous area of less than 1000 square feet, a minimum of three samples must be collected in random areas. For each homogenous area of 1000 — 5000 square feet, a minimum of five samples must be collected in random areas. Areas of 5001 square feet or greater require a minimum of 7 samples. These laws are defined by the EPA (AHERA) and Colorado State Regulation 8. Indoor Environmental Services, Inc Dba: Q Consulting, Inc. Project: 352 A Beaver Dam Circle, Vail, Colorado Asbestos Sampling Report — Page 2 of 2 Determination of homogenous sampling areas — Homogenous Areas are determined by type of suspect material, texture, color and location. Boyle Engineering Group 1650 Failridge Road Vail, CO 81657 Re: 11 7/8" BCI 90 Series Joist End Reaction Capacity 352A Beaver Dam Circle Vail, CO "" ; ,t • i Boise Cascade Per your request, we evaluated the end reaction capacity of 11 7/8" BCI 90 series roof joists at the above referenced address. The scope of our work was to provide a BCI joist end reaction capacity from the attached proposed detail, as designed by your office. No other structural components as shown in this proposed detail were eva►uated by Boise Cascade. Per our review, the attached proposed BCI joist end bearing condition is acceptable provided that the bent steel plate was designed to support the full reaction load. The joist reaction capacity can be determined by the length of solid bearing beyond the existing 2'/" slotted bottom flange. For 11 7/8" BCI 90 series joists, the maximum allowable end reaction for a 3%2" bearing length, with proper web stiffeners each face, is 1950 Ibs. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any other information. Sincerely, - ' Y% l -.. - '. ___ it ': : r.a'4 - s l ' tI , "*. Jeff A. Frontage Road West ; Vail, Colorado 81657 ' Subject: Roof Rafter Notch 352A Beaver Dam Circle Remodel ' Vail, Colorado Dear Martin: This is to confirm that I have discussed the situation at the above noted remodel where the framer has notched the bottom flange of the BCI rafter with Jeff Sexton from the engineering deparhnent of the regional Boise Cascade office. Essentially he stated that Boise Cascade would stand behind their product if we provided 3%z" of bearing under these rafter ends beyond the 2'h" notched zone. I designed the attached detail to provide this bearing length. I have reviewed this instailation in the field and found that it was implemented according to said detail. The web stiffeners were previously installed by the framer. As svch, these rafters are capable of achieving the maximum reaction capacity of 1950 pounds as stated in Jeff Sexton's &-14-12 letter. Coincidentally, this is the actual end reaction that these rafters would have under a fuli 100 psf snow load. I hereby approve of this installation of the bent plate as installed. Furthermore, I have deternuned that these rafters will support the 100 ps requirement as installed. Please give me a call if you have any questions or comments on this tPDO ( O .
