Minor Exterior Alteration
General Information: This application is required for all proposals involving minor changes to buildings and site im-
provements, such as roofing, painting, window additions, landscaping, fences, retaining walls, etc. Applicable Vail
Town Code sections can be found at www.vailgov.com under Vail Information - Town Code Online. All projects re-
quiring design review must receive approval prior to submitting a building permit application. An application for Design
Review cannot be accepted until all required information is received by the Community Development Department, as
outlined in the submittal requirements. The project may also need to be reviewed by the Town Council and/or the Plan-
ning and Environmental Commission. Design review approval expires one year from the date of approval, unless a
building permit is issued and construction commences.

Mr. Gibson,
Four drawings are being submitted for your review regarding the Smith Residence at 333
Beaver Dam Road, Vail. I spoke with Hans Berglund of DRB Vail and he directed me to
you. The issue at hand is the redesign of the Landscape Plan regarding this residence.
Please allow me to walk you through the changes.
1. The driveway has been modified to ease transition in and out of the site including
access to the garage.
2. The front entry has been simplified to soften the walkway to the home by
removing the hard rectangular pattern originally specified.
3. The patio outside of the kitchen is now a grand patio without water feature.
4. The water feature under the breezeway has been changed to reflect a more natural
water feature.
5. The swimming pool has been eliminated. The spa remains with some design
changes. The spa at the North wall has been eliminated.
6. The planting plan has been changed from a formal garden to one more natural to
the settings of Vail Colorado. The number of Aspens has been reduced in favor
of increasing evergreens on the site in keeping with the neighboring residences.
The plant count for trees remain the same with a slight increase in count overall.
The overall concept here is to replace a formal landscape with a more traditional native
landscape as is the case within this neighborhood. Should you have any questions, please
