The purpose of this site visit was to observe the existing framing conditions of the roof and floors and to determine structural repairs that will be required to allow relocation of an upper level ridge support column to allow renovation of the third level. We noted the following: 1. The existing roof ridge beam is a 5 1/8"x 12" glu-lam beam that is spliced above a column that is located approximately 13.5 feet east of the western third level building wall. 2. The support column below the ridge beam splice will have to be removed to allow for relocation of an interior wall. Prior to the removal of this column the contractor shall temporarily shore all roof framing members. 3. The new column will be located a maximum of 36 inches east of the original column. 4. A new (4)-1 3/."x14" LVL ridge beam, approximately 17 feet long will have to be installed below the existing glu-lam ridge beam to the west of the new ridge column as shown in the attached section SX-1. The third level floor beam below the new column will have to be reinforced, because of the column load relocation. A new W6x25 steel beam shall be installed below the existing 6 3/4"x12" glu-lam beam as shown in the attached section SX-2. The new beam will be supported each end as detailed in this section on existing column packs in the walls below. Manroe and Newell Engineers, Inc. will observe the repair framing during construction to confirm that framing has been installed per our instructions. After the new floor beam, the new ridge column and the new ridge beam have been installed the roof framing will be in its original structural state. The scope of work was limited to the following areas that are scheduled for renovation: ■ Master bedroom on upper level ■ Master bathroom on upper level ■ Bedroom adjacent to hallway on upper level ■ Bathroom adjacent to hallway on upper level,and • Bathroom adjacent to kitchen on main level The inspection was limited to those suspect materials and areas that would be impacted by demolition activities during the scheduled renovation. ASBESTOS INSPECTION METHODOLOGY Asbestos inspection activities were performed by an Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) accredited and State of Colorado certified inspector. A homogeneous area(material) is defined as an area containing a material that appears similar throughout with regard to color,texture, and date of application. Each homogeneous material is classified into one of three available types of homogeneous material descriptions. ■ Surfacing Material refers to a wide range of trowel or spray-applied materials typically used for acoustical or fireproofing purposes. Examples include plaster,spray-applied fireproo�ng,and acoustical � texture ceilings. ■ Thermal System Insulation (TSI)refers to insulation that is applied to heating or mechanical system components. Examples include pipe,tank and boiler insulation. ■ Miscellaneous Materials refers to all other materials that do not fall into one of the above categories. Examples include floor tile, adhesives,and ceiling tiles. Once the type of homogeneous material was determined,it was then classified as friable or non-friable. The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)distinguishes between friable and non-friable forms of Asbestos-Containing Building Materials (ACBM). Friable materials,when dry, can be crumbled or reduced to powder by hand pressure,whereas non-friable materials cannot. Friable materials are more likely to be released into the air, especially during renovation and demolition of the building. Therefore, the distinction between friable and non-friable homogeneous material is important. � ` Mr.Dan Feeney June 27,2011,Page 2 EPA/Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment(CDPHE)have identified 2 categories of non friable material. CDPHE and EPA policy statements define that Category I non friable materials are not likely to become friable during demolition,whereas Category II non friable materials are likely to become friable during demolition. CDPHE and EPA National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants(NESHAP)require removal of a11 friable ACBM and Category II non-friable ACBM. Category I non-friable suspect materials may remain in place during demolition, provided demolition methods do not render the material friable. For renovation activities that impact ACBM, all friable and non-friable materials must be properly removed prior to renovation activities in accordance with applicable regulations. WALSH collected bulk samples of the homogenous materials in a random and representative manner,as determined by the inspector. Samples were collected by taking a composite sample that included all layers within the suspect material. All samples were placed in sealed, labeled containers,and the sample descriptions and locations were recorded. Photographs were also taken to provide a visual reference for each material. The bulk samples were submitted for progressive analysis to DCM Science Laboratory, Inc., an NVLAP accredited laboratory. Analysis of the bulk samples was performed using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)using procedures developed by McCrone Research Institute and in compliance with the guidelines established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-600/M4-82-020,Dec. 1982)to determine asbestos type and content. The PLM samples are reported as percent asbestos by weight. Percent asbestos for separate layers and total for the sample are delineated in the laboratory report. Unused portions of samples are archived for six months unless the client requests special handling. ASBESTOS FINDINGS WALSH performed the inspection and sampling on June 20, 2011. A total of four(4) suspect materials were identified. A total of ten bulk samples were collected for PLM analysis. EPA and OSHA define asbestos containing material as material containing more than 1% asbestos,or materials that are assumed to contain asbestos.
