Tlis reort presents opinions formed as a result of our observations and/or compaction testing of tle fill during this visit. We have relied on the contractor to continue applying the recommended compactive effort and moisture to the fill during times when our observer is not observing operations. Tests are made of the fill only as believed necessary to calibrate our observer's jud ment Test data are not the sole basis for o inios on whether the fill meets s ecifications. Mike Brath Scott B. Town Engineer Report#: 13A Sheet: 1 of 2 Department of Public Works/Transportation 1309 Elkhorn Drive Vail,Colorado 81657 Project: Lionshead Transit Center,Vail, Colorado Weather: ❑ Sunny Cloudy ❑ Rain ❑ Snow Temp: 70°F± Construction Activities/Observations: Engineer arrived on site, as requested, to observe the installation of the micropiles along the west side of the existing parking garage. The pile group consists of 3 piles which are located approxirriately 6 feet west of Gridline 1. No micropiles were installed at the time of our observation due to site conditions inconsistent with the assumed design conditions and criteria presented in the plan documents. Engineer met with B&Y Drilling and FCI, Inc. to discuss the required changes to the micropile specifications. Engineer deternvned that, due to the presence of approximately 18 feet of wall backf'ill in the area of the micropiles, the minimum depth of the 3 piles from existing grade may be no less than 43 feet to achieve the 25 feet of penetration into native soils as outlined by Yeh and Associates. Engineer also determined that the minimum length for the micropiles to be installed for the proposed pedestrian bridge will need to be extended due to the presence of existing fill. The six piles located north of Gridline 1 and between Gridlines 1 and 3 will need to be a minimum length of 50 feet to achieve the required 30 feet of penetration into native soils. This is due to the presence of approximately 20 feet of foundation wall backfill adjacent to the lowest level of the parking garage. The micropiles located north of Gridline E-A and between Gridlines E 3 and E-4 will need to be a minimum of 35 feet in length to account for approximately 5 feet of additional utility fill at surface elevation. Engineer will return to site tomorrow to continue observation. Katie Shaw Scott B. Myers, P.E.
