Review Comments: Welcome Center Fire Protection Calculations: Approved with no comments. Parking Garage Hydraulic Calculations: 1. Per our on site meeting on 6/8/11, the AHJ is requiring a standpipe demand of 500 gpm. The calculations are completed at 1250 gpm. NFPA 14 requires a minimum of 1250 gpm for new construction. Since this is an existing building with an existing standpipe system, the design requirements at the time of construction are allowed to remain. Vail Fire & Emergency Services is only requiring the system be capable of 500 gpm and is waiving the 1250 gpm requirement. Calculations do not have to be revised, however, the system demand should be noted at 500 gpm. This will allow a 2 way inlet, rather than a larger inlet that would be required at a demand of 1250 gpm. Drawings: 1. Several field changes were determined during the 6/8/11 meeting. Most of these were minor and were well documented by Phoenix Fire Protection, the fire protection contractor. Two of the existing FDCs were eliminated due to lack of access and low likelihood of use. These items should be noted on the as built drawings prepared by the fire protection contractor. 2. Sprinklers are not required in exterior walkway of Welcome Center. This area was discussed and reviewed with Vail Fire Department. 3. Areas clouded on shop drawings with a notation showing “This area will need sprinkler heads added for ceiling head obstructions, unprotected ceiling pockets; need to be covered to meet NFPA 13”. Contract documents illustrated design intent and instructed contractor to provide sprinklers per NFPA 13 and to coordinate with reflected ceiling plan. Revise plans to include additional heads as required, following design intent of sprinklered areas. Sprinklers are not required in attic or in exterior walkway areas per Vail Fire & Emergency Services. 4. 3rd floor area is clouded with a notation stating: “This area may need antifreeze loop because piping is concealed above T&G ceilings, beams may need to be drilled for routing of main”. Contract documents indicated that contractor is responsible for freeze protection and instructs the contractor to coordinate with structural and other trades. Coordination is responsibility of fire protection contractor. If construction doesn’t allow for a wet pipe system as specified, contractor shall issue an RFI for consideration. M.L.
