Description of Work for pobson Ice Arena Sky Light Shade Retro-fit.
The Scope of Work (SOW) for review in this permit application is a retro-fitting of the existing skylight
shade system installed in the Dobson Ice Arena in Vail. The current system is inoperable, and is
permanently fixed in the closed location, though several panels of the system are damaged and cannot
properly block light coming into the structure to achieve a"black-out" condition. However, worse, is that
they cannot be opened up to allow the use daylight do light the interior and reduce the need for the
interior lights.
The current system is a set of 6 different sections of louvered fabric panels, controlled by a common
motor (current system seen in picture below).
The new system will installed in the place of the existing panels, but will feature 2 sets of shades, a lower
and an upper. The shades themselves are made up of rolling fabric with motorized rollers at each end
(see diagram below). The fabric is pulled by cables, with half of the length made up only of cables (open)
and the other half the fabric, to provide a level of shade. The upper shade is intended to provide a partial
block, dimming the light and keeping direct sunlight off of the ice below, while the lower shade fabric is a
full block/blackout material. As such, the new system will be able to achieve 3 levels of daylight control:
full open for direct daylight into the arena, a partial daylight, and a blackout to maximize the block (though
some light leakage from the edges will exist).

In order the implement the system, power has to be run to each of the drive motor systems, as well as
the control paneis. All will be enclosed in conduit. In total, there are 6 skylight vaults, which will contain
4 motors per vault, for a total of 26 motors and control wire. Each shade is composed of 2 motors,
which connect to a controller that manages the positioning of the two motors to extend and retract the
shade. All the controliers will be ganged together for control such that all the partial shade systems will
operate together, and all the black-out systems will operate together, via 2 switches, per the cut sheets
provided.

We have completed a review of the existing skylight and roof structure of the Dobson Arena for the
addition of a new shade system and the removal of the current shade system. Information about the
new system was provided to us by Jon Grohne of Colorado Commercial Interiors. At the ends
where the skylight is made up of triangular windows, the existing paneling will be removed and
replaced with a coating on the glass. At the remaining 6 rectangular wells of the skylight, each
approximately 8' wide by 20' long, the existing steel tube framing and fabric shades will be
removed. In each well, the new shade system will consist of 2 fabric shades, each requiring a
motor placed at each end of the fabric for a total of 4 motors per well. Each motor will weigh
approximately 6 to 20 pounds. The lighter shade, closest to the window will weigh approximately
80 pounds, while the heavier shade will weigh approximately 86 pounds.
We have determined that it is structurally acceptable to install the new shade system. The new
system will have no effect of the load carrying capacity of the existing roof.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service. Please call if you have any questions regarding our
analysis or conclusions.
Respectfully submitted,
David Wittman, PE

DESCRIPTION
The IGC system provides control of one or more motors in groups and/or individually from one or
more locations. This advanced yet simple to install modular control system can be activated
manually or automatically. The hearf of the system is the IGC Motor Controller used for each
motor. However, greater economy can be obtained using the IGC/3N1 version for those jobs
that call for controlling at least three motors individually or in groups.
The IGC is a very flexible control system that can be configured in a variety of ways (i.e.,
individual window control, floor control, total building control, etc.) to meet the requirements of
your customers,
The Individual-Group Control System is compatible with other SOMFY controls (i, e., Remote
Control, IntelliS Timer, Decorator Somfy-Matic , Comfort Control, etc.) and security, lighting, and
HVAC systems. '""
The Individual IGC Controller has an added feature. It is equipped with a dry contact input that
can interface with a window afarm system. One typical application is for casement windows;
when the window is open, the motor will not operate, This will help prevent damage to window
coverings,

LOW VOLTAGE CONNECTIONS °c
1. Individual ports (INDJ control only one output. The Decorator .,,

cable.
2. A switch connected to the Master porfs (MAS) operates ail the
motors on the control board as a group. This port can also be ;

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
A. System Power Up
1. With power off, wire IGC or IGC/3N1 as indicated above. Turn
ali circuit breakers on (Note: motors should not move).
2. Pressing the DOWN arrow on the IGC Switch should move the
window covering down or out. If the direction is correct
proceed to the ne individual switch and repeat,
3. If the direction is not correct, turn off circuit breakers and
reverse the red and black wires at the appropriate motor and
repeat step 2.
B. Individual Motor Operation
given by activating the direction of movement. For example, if
the treatment is moving up, activating another UP command
within 3 minutes will stop the window treatment. Aiternately, it
can be stopped in any pos'rtion by depressing the stop button on
the IGC Switch.
C. Group Operation
1. All motors on an IGC/3N1 can be operated as a group from an
IGC Switch connected to the Master Port. For multiple IGCs in a
system, connect one Master Porf to the next,
2. A low voltage terminal block is provided for group controi from -
an external device such as home automation, lighting or other
system.
1. A single motor can be controlied from its corresponding
individual switch. To activate either direction, momentarily 3. Direction and stop commands are the same as for Individual
