SECTION 02965 REVEGETATION SPECIFICATION PART I — GENERAL 1.1. DESCRIPTION A. Disturbed areas shall be revegetated as indicated on the Drawings and as described in the Specifications. Revegetate using seed, plantings, top soil, fertilizer, soil amendment, seed additive and erosion control as specified. 1.2. TIMING OF WORK A. Revegetation shall be completed as soon as practicable after work in disturbed areas is complete. Planting and seeding shall be done only when the ground is not frozen, snow covered, or in an otherwise unsuitable planting condition. Special conditions may exist that warrant a variance in the planting dates or conditions. A written request shall be submitted to or originated by the Engineer stating the special conditions and proposed variance. PART 2 — PRODUCTS 2.1 SOIL FERTILIZER A. Fertilizer shall be Biosol Forte or equivalent, shall be applied at a rate of 1200 lbs /acre. 2.2 SOIL AMENDMENT A. Soil amendment shall be Menefee granular humate, shall be applied at a rate of 600 lbs /acre. 2.3 SEED ADDITIVE A. Mychorrizal inoculum shall be in the form of micronized powder, shall contain a minimum of 4 species of endomycorrizae, shall be certified with a minimum count of 1000,000 propagules per pound, and shall meet the specifications of MycoApply Micronized Endo, or approved equal. MycoApply Micronized Endo is available from Bowman Supply, Denver, CO. #7 Hole Electric Line Burial Vail Recreation District Peak Civil Engineering, Inc. 2.4 SEED A. Seed shall meet the following minimum requirements: a. All seed shall be free of noxious weed seeds listed on the all states noxious weed seed exam. For Cheatgrass and the additional plant Smooth Brome, the number of viable seeds present per pound or kg of routine noxious seed shall be as reflected in test results of the Colorado Seed Lab at Colorado State University. If noxious weed seeds are found, or if Cheatgrass or Smooth Brome seeds are found above average levels, seed is not suitable. b. Re- vegetation shall be completed using native species where feasible, preferably collected from local genetic stock or seed available from local Forests' Native Plant Materials programs. Revegetation for all USFS lands shall be in compliance with the Routt National Forest's Re- vegetation policy except that the specific seed mixes shall be derived in consultation with the local USFS botany representative. c. If a species in the specified seed mix is not available, the Contractor shall provide written evidence by three seed vendors that the species is not available. The mix may be adjusted and a new species may be substituted after consultation with and approval by the USFS. d. Furnish in fully- labeled, standard sealed containers. e. Percentage and germination of each seed type in the mixture, purity, and weed seed content of the mixture shall be clearly stated on the label. f. Subject to the testing provisions of the USDA, with the month and year of test clearly stated on the label. g. Seed which has become wet, moldy, or otherwise damaged will not be acceptable. h. Supplied on a Pure Live Seed (PLS) basis. i. A. General: Straw /Hay Mulch or Hydromulch shall be used on slopes less than 3:1. Erosion control blanket (ECB) shall be used on slopes greater than 3:1. Excelsior Sediment Logs shall be used to control erosion as indicated on the Drawings. a. Immediately after seeding has been completed mulch shall be uniformly applied so that no bare soil is showing. b. Material for mulching shall consist of Certified Weed Free field or marsh hay or straw of oats, barley, wheat, rye of triticale certified under the Colorado Department of Agriculture Weed Free Forage Certification Program and inspected as regulated by the Weed Free Forage Act, Titled 35, Article 27.5, CRS. c. The Contractor shall provide a transit certificate for mulch materials that has been filled out and signed by the grower and by the Department of Agriculture inspector. d. Straw or hay in a stage of decomposition (discolored, brittle, rotten, or moldy) or old, dry mulch which breaks in the crimping process will not be accepted. e. Hydromulch material for hydraulic mulching shall consist of virgin wood fibers manufactured expressly from clean whole wood chips. The chips shall be processed in such a manner as to contain no growth or germination inhibiting factors. The wood cellulose fiber mulch shall conform to the following specifications: (1) Percent moisture content 10.0% f 3.0% (2) Percent Organic Matter* 99.3% f 0.2% (Wood Cellulose Fiber) (3) Percent Ash Content* 0.7% f 0.2% (4)pH4.9f0.5 (5) Water Holding Capacity* * *1200 -1600 grams *Oven -Dried Basis * *Per 100 grams of fiber Material for mulch tackifier shall consist of a free - flowing, noncorrosive powder produced from the natural plant gum of Plantago insularis (Desert Indianwheat), applied in a slurry with water and wood fiber. The powder shall possess the following properties: (1) Protein content 1.6% t 0.2% (2) Ash content 2.7% f 0.2% (3) Fiber 4.0% ± 0.4% (4) pH I% solution 6.5 - 8.0 #7 Hole Electric Line Burial Vail Recreation District Peak Civil Engineering, Inc. The material used for mulch tackifier shall not contain any mineral filler, recycled cellulose fiber, clays, or other substances which may inhibit germination or growth of plants. B. Straw/Hay Mulch: Hand spread straw mulch shall be uniformly spread over the area at a rate of 200 lbs/acre or until no bare soil is visible. Mulch shall be crimped in with a crimper or other approved equipment. Hand - crimping shall occur on areas where mechanical methods cannot be used. C. Hydromulch: Hydromulch shall be 100 % wood fiber mulch The operator shall spray a homogeneous slurry mixture uniformly over the seeded area. Application shall not be done in the presence of free surface water. a. Mixing procedure for the hydraulic mulch and tackifier mixture shall be as follows: i. Fill tank with water approximately % full. ii. Continue filling while agitating with engine at full rpm. iii. Pour tackifier, at a moderate rate, directly into area of greatest turbulence. iv. With the recommended amount of tackifier in solution, add wood cellulose fiver mulch. Do not add fertilizer. v. Apply the hydromulch and tackifier mixture at the following rate: Wood Cellulose Fiber Mulch Tackifier 2,000 lbs /acre 125 lbs/acre D. ECB shall be Curlex II Fibrenet (Double Sided Blanket for steep slope applications) by American Excelsior, or equivalent approved by the Engineer. The blanket shall consist of weed -free curled wood excelsior with 80% of the fibers greater than or equal to 6 inches in length. The blanket shall be of consistent thickness with fibers distributed evenly throughout the entire area of the blanket. The excelsior material shall not contain any weed seed or chemical additives. The top of the blanket shall be covered with biodegradable jute netting. j. The blanket shall have the following material characteristics: i. Thickness: 0.35 inches ii. Mass per Unit Area: 0.68 lb /yd2 iii. Fiber Count: 7,000 per yd2 iv. Light Penetration: 42.4% v. Functional Longevity: 12 -18 months E. Excelsior Sediment Logs shall be Curlex Type III by American Excelsior, or equivalent approved by the Engineer. The logs shall be 9 -inch diameter and shall consist of an outside open -weave containment fabric filled with excelsior fibers. Fibers shall be evenly distributed throughout the diameter and length of the #7 Hole Electric Line Burial Vail Recreation District Peak Civil Engineering, Inc. sediment log. Excelsior fibers shall be weed and seed free, and shall consist of weed -free curled wood excelsior with 80% of the fibers greater than or equal to 6 inches in length. PART 3 — EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Areas to be seeded: a. Prepare areas to be revegetated by fine grading. Fine grading may leave minor irregularities and cobbles up to 3 inches in diameter. b. Apply topsoil as specified to a minimum depth of 3 inches. 3.2 APPLICATION A. Fertilizer and Soil Amendment a. Apply a mixture of fertilizer and humate at a 2:1 ratio. Fertilizer shall be applied at a rate of 1200 pls /acre and human at a rate of 6001bs /acre. Fertilizer shall be Biosol Forte and Humate shall be Menefee Granular Humate. Apply by means of a mechanical spreader or other acceptable method which is capable of maintaining a uniform rate of application. B. Seed Additive a. Immediately prior to seeding, mychorrizal inoculum shall be added to seed bags and mixed thoroughly to coat all seeds. Apply mychorrizal inoculum at a rate of 20 lbs /acre. C. Seeding a. Seed mixture shall be applied at the specified rates. b. Perform erosion control at a sequence and timing that is consistent with achieving optimal revegation success. c. Do not seed during windy weather or when the ground is frozen, excessively wet, or otherwise untillable. D. Irrigation a. Irrigation of revegetated areas following the initial watering of plantings and seeding by the Contractor shall be the responsibility of the Owner. This shall be coordinated with a designated representative of the Owner to ensure continuity of plant watering. #7 Hole Electric Line Burial Vail Recreation District Peak Civil Engineering, Inc. 3.4 ACCEPTANCE AND WARRANTY A. The Contractor and Engineer will inspect the site together at a mutually agreed timing after seed has had an opportunity to germinate and become established to determine seed establishment success. Any seeded area larger than 10 square feet that does not exhibit emerging vegetation by shall be re- seeded at the Contractor's expense. #7 Hole Electric Line Burial Vail Recreation District Peak Civil Engineering, Inc. SECTION 02115 WILLOW CLUMP SPECIFICATION PART I — GENERAL 1.1. DESCRIPTION A. Disturbed areas shall be vegetation as indicated on the Drawings and willow clumps provided as indicated herein. 1.2. TIMING OF WORK A. Planting of Willow Clumps shall be completed as soon as practicable after completion of the project. Planting shall be done with the approval of the Engineer only when the ground is not frozen, snow covered, or in any otherwise unsuitable planting condition. Special conditions may exist that warrant a variance in the planting dates or conditions, a written request shall be submitted to or originated by the Engineer stating the special conditions and proposed variance. PART 2 — HARVESTING AND STORING WILLOW CLUMPS 2.1 HARVESTING WILLOW CLUMPS A. Dig straight down and under the willow clump mass. Start the hole about 10" away from the stems and dig down about 2 feet. Try to get at least 70% of the willow mass. Stems can be cut back to 5 feet in height. 2.2 STORING HARVESTED WILLOW CLUMPS A. Once clumps have been harvested they should be stored in a cool place. If willows cannot be placed in the shade or indoors, then they should be covered with a tarp to protect them from direct sunlight. Do not let the clumps or the soil dry out. Willow clumps should be continually watered so that the soil stays at least partially saturated. PART 3 — EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Dig a hole that is deep enough so that the willow clump is just above the average water table (i.e. summertime depth). A. Place the willow clump in the hole so that 4 to 5 feet of stems are above ground. B. Fill the remainder of the hole with a slurry of soil and water that is the consistency of thick mud. C. Cut V2 to 1/3 of the willow tops straight across. 3.3 ACCEPTANCE AND WARRANTY A. The Contractor and Engineer shall inspect the site together when planting is complete and determine willow clump establishment success.
