There is a 2" underground medium pressure gas supply line from the gas meter to the location of inechanical
units on the east side of the house. From existing gas pressure regulator at this location we will install one 1-
1/2" underground gas line for the exterior fire pit(450,000 BTU) and one 1" underground line for exterior BBQ ,
(100,000 BTU). The distance from the gas pressure regulator to the patio is about 80'. Old underground gas ',
supply line will be disconnected and abandoned as it would not supply enough gas for both appliances and old I
stub-outs would not work for new locations. I
Please let me know if you need any moqre details or if you need any drawings for TOV. I

Subject: Recommendations for Stacked Boulder Wall Slope Design, Lot 26, Glen
Lyon Subdivision, 1290 Westhaven Circle, Vail, Colorado
Dear Paul:
As requested, we are providing recommendations for design of the proposed stacked
boulder wall slope at the subject site. The services were performed in accordance with
our agceement for professional engineering services to Ceres Landscape Architecture,
dated July 29, 2011. A review of the site was made on August 17, 2011. Hepworth-
Pawlak Geotechnical previously performed a subsoil study for the residence foundation
design on Lot 26 and presented our fmdings in a report dated June 27, 2001, Job No. 401
157.
Site Conditions: The boulder covered slope is proposed to extend east from the existing
boulder walls and terraces constructed for Lot 26 residence, and onto Lot 27. The new
terraces will involve cut and fill depths typically up to 4 to 5 feet and include a spa and
fire pit on relatively level ground. The existing terrain is moderate to steep sloping,
natural north facing hillside covered with a mixed aspen and pine tree forest. Most of the
dead pine trees have been rernoved from the uphil] parts of Lots 26 and 27. The hillside
slopes up from Westhaven Circle at about 25%then increases gradually to about 30 to
50% through the proposed stacked boulder slope area. Lot 27 is vacant. No indications of
hillside slope instability, such as seeps or slumps were observed within or adjacent to the
project area. The existing stacked boulder walls on Lot 26 where they will tie into the
proposed walls appear to be performing adequately although we have not performed any
review or analysis of the constructed wall sections. For our previous subsoil study, a
boring was drilled on the lower part of the lot. The boring encountered clayey silty sand

Recommendations: Stacked boulder walls slope up to about 5 feet tall to retain shallow
cuts and fills should be feasible with proper design and construction. The boulder walls
are designed as gravity retaining structures with adequate section for stability. The
individual tiers should be limited to 4 feet exposed height. The walls 3 feet or more in
retained height should be provided with an underdrain system to prevent buildup of

hydrostatic pressure. A typical detail for the stacked boulder wall slope section is
provided on Figure 1, attached.
The boulders should be subangular shape and minimum 2 feet in size(or larger) with the
larger boulders placed at the bottom of the wall. The base width of the walls should be a �
minimum '-/3 the wall height. The base of the wall should be keyed below the ground '
surface at least 1 foot and bear on the natural granular soils. The topsoil should be I
removed and loosened soils should be moistened and compacted �rior to placing the I
boulders. The face of the wall slwuld be battered back at about '/2 horizontal to 1 vertical. �
The space between and behind the boulders can be backfilled with 3/-inch drain rock. A '�I
filter fabric, such as Mirafi 140 N, should separate the on-site soils from the drain rock.
Graded slopes between the wall tiers and above the walls should be graded at 2 horizontal �
to I vertical or flatter and vegetated to prevent erosion. We should observe the
excavation and construction of the boulder walls to evaluate compliance with our
recommendations.
The recommendations presented in this report are based on our review of the project site
and our experience in the area. Exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions for
slope stability analysis has not been performed. Variations could be encountered during
construction and change the recommendations presented in this report. We should
evaluate the bearing conditions and compaction ofbackfill for the individual walls at the
time of construction.
