To Whom it may concern:
It is my understanding that the South Lodge Tower plans to install a new pit mounted scissors lift in front
of the existing dock leveler, at the South Lodge Tower Loading Dock. The proposed layout is shown on
the attached plans.
1. As long as the new demolition and construction occurs within the Slab On Grade Section of the dock
area, Structural Engineering review (of the existing tunnel area structural slab) is not required.
Construction should stay at least 4 feet away from the foundation wall (below), as noted on the plan.
THe slab on grade area of the dock is noted on the attached plan.
2. Available information indicates that the existing dock foundation is approx. 1 foot deep. THe lift pit
is to be approx 15" deep, plus a 6" concrete (pit) slab= 21". Carefully excavate adjacent to the
existing dock footing to avoid undermining the footing.
3. THe pit slab should be designed as recommended by the lift manufacturer. (Concrete mix,
Reinforcing, dowels, steel angles at the top of the pit, control and isolation joints, etc.)
Pentalift should review construction dimensions, plans, and details, prior to construction.
4. Pentalift is to prepare specific plans detailing pit dimensions and construction details for pit
installation, as well as Lift Specifications, which should be used for construction . Attached plans are
for general layout information.
5. The existing dock leveler is to be disconnected, and the electric service for it connected to the new
scissors lift. THe existing dock is 3.33' high, and the new lift travel height is 4.1 T, so that the lift can
also be used as a leveler. It is my understanding that "wings" are to be provided on the lift to span
across to the existing dock, as well as span to the truck (two sides).
6. The site plan assumes that the new lift will be located within 1 foot of the existing dock.
7. Although I do not believe any utility mains are located under the concrete slab (in an area within 10
feet of the edge of the existing dock), there may be utility services: Utility locates should be provided
prior to excavation/demo.
8. The lift manufacturer has indicated that a pit drain is not required (for a covered space). Otherwise,
a sump pump can be provided to drain the new pit, or a gravity drain could connect to the existing
drain noted on the attached plan. The existing drain is fairly shallow.
9. It is my understanding that the lift is to be designed to allow wheel loads onto the lift. Otherwise,
a curb should be provided to prevent truck wheels from loading the lift.
10. It is recommended that 2 sacrificial clearance bars be provide on the beam above the dock area, (one
on each side) to wam trucks of low clearance. Signage might be nice to.
