It is becoming a significant issue for spruce trees in the Vail Valley. Infestations exist on public and private lands on hundreds of spruce trees throughout the Town of Vail. Pine needle scale feeds on sap in the bark and needles of pine, fir and spruce trees. This weakens the overall health of the tree which creates a loss of needles and the possibility of secondary infestations which could ultimately kill the tree. Landowners who inspect their conifer trees and take remedial action if pine needle scale is found to be present are usually successful in restoring the health of infected trees. On my most recent visit to the Rosenbach Residence I found significant signs of scale damage in and around there property. I have spoke to Gary Rosenbach and explained the importance of treatments to combat against the ongoing battle with these pests at his residence. I recommended removing and replacing several trees in the island as long as he signed up for an ongoing PHC program after the fact. He understood that removing the heavily infested trees was not going to solve the problem.
