A Stormceptor unit should be inspected once every six months. Regular Inspection is Important to quantify the rate of sediment build up and to check for the occurrence of a spill. Now frequently does a Stormceptor unit have to be serviced? A Stormceptor unit should be serviced once the sediment depth reaches 15% of the total storage volume of the model. The site should be regularly inspected to determine the rate of sediment accumulation. How is oil checked and cleaned out? The density of oil is lighter than water and can be checked through the oil inspection port. The oil port (6 inches in diameter) may be accessed to measure the depth of the oil and to access the oil directly for removal. How is Stormceptor serviced? The Stormceptor System is serviced using a vacuum truck. Servicing companies may be found in the local yellow pages under liquid waste disposal. The vacuum truck should be of an adequate size to clean the respective unit. How long does It take to clean out a Stormceptor unit? Is should take less than two hours to service most Stormceptor units. Is It difficult to service a Stormceptor unit? No. The level of difficulty can be overcome by developing cost effective, efficient methods of servicing through practice. Can a Stormceptor unit installed deeper than 33 feet be serviced? Yesl At 33 feet absolute zero is reached. Today, vacuum technology and equipment is commonly available to service units at far greater depths. You should, of course, inform the service company if your unit is particularly deep, Must all the water be removed and disposed of from the Stormceptor unit? Check with your local ordinances, however, generally only the sediment and oil need to be removed from the lower chamber. The water may be temporarily Pumped out of the unit and returned once the sediment has been removed. What Is the definition of clean? A Stormceptor unit Is generally considered clean when at least 85% of the sediment is removed from the unit. Like any BMP it Is physically Impossible to clean out a system to 100°x6 clean, and It is not cost effective. 1ofI £ 'd P W O N ,Oui '2u1a88u12ua Hl die NVZ£ :6 ti00Z 'ZI1100 Is an oil sheen a problem? With a steady influx of water with high concentrations of oil, a sheen bay may be noticeable at the riser pipe. This may occur because a rainbow or sheen can be seen at very small oil concentrations ( <10 ppm), Stormceptor will remove over 95% of all free oil and the appearance of a sheen at the riser pipe with large Influent oil concentrations does not mean that the unit is not working to this level of removal. in addition, If the influent oil Is emulsified, the Stormceptor will not be able to remove it. The Stormceptor is designed for free oil removal, not emulsified conditions (like the effluent from a car wash). Servicing Facts Identiflcetlon — The Stormceptor System Is Installed with an embossed frame and cover clearly labeled "Stormceptor ". Access — The Stormceptor System may be accessed for inspection and servicing through the maintenance hole (MM) cover. Once the MH cover Is removed, the oil inspection port and riser pipe opening may be accessed for inspection or servicing. Inspection — Using a dipstick, Sludge Judge, or similar device, the Stormceptor unit can be inspected through the oil cieanout port, at least once every six months. The sediment depth and' oil level Is to be measured. Once the sediment depth reaches the recommended levels as indicated In the table below, the units should be serviced. if any large presence of oil Is measured, the oil should be immediately removed and disposed of properly, Sediment Depths indicating Required Servicing Model Sediment Capacity (fts) Sediment Depth STC 45011 45 8 STC 900 90 8 STC 1200 125 10 STC 1800 205 15 STC 2400 215 12 STC 3600 415 17 STC 4800 535 15 STC 6000 690 19 STC 7200 825 15 STC 11000 11200 15* STC 13000 1,360 19* STC 16000 1,730 15* - Prn,u-b gr.,nutren8 - urczTQ,1, r t 'd 6tWON Servicing — Once the sediment depth has reached the recommended depth for maintenance, the unit should be serviced. Pollutant Build -up Model (Sartor & Boyd, 1972) 2. Pollutant Wash -off Model (Sartor & Boyd, 1972) 3. Hydrologic Model (USEPA SWMM v4.3) 4. Mixing Model (Tchobanoglous and Schroeder (1987) 5. Settling Equations (Stokes' Law) Stormceptor is sized using the local historical rainfall data and takes into account all storms (it is not sized using the infrequent design storm). Small frequent events account for the majority of the annual runoff and pollutant load. Even in the larger events, Stormceptor still can take advantage of " flrst flush". For the purpose of an example for the Eagle area, I put together a sizing for a 2.2 -acre site that would be 80% impervious surfaces. Using the Eagle, CO rainfall station, the site would call for a STC 900 to remove at least 80% of the total suspended solids (TSS) from the stormwater runoff with the "fine sediment" definition. On the next page you will see two runoff hydrology graphs. The first graph (Graph A) represents the runoff hydrology from the Eagle, CO rainfall station for a site that would be 2.2 acres of 80% impervious services. The graph shows the rainfall from 1984 though 1993. In looking at the graph, I chose to use 1987 for this example because it looked like the year with the biggest (design) storm. The second graph (Graph B) is the Eagle, CO runoff hydrology for the 2.2 -acre, 80°x6 impervious site for 1987. For this example, 31,450 ft3 of stormwater came off of the site during the year. 30,550 ftj of stormwater would be treated (97% of the total runoff). 850 ft3 of stormwater would have bypassed the unit (after benefit of first flush). ll 'd 6 t I t ' 0 N 0 ui '2UIJ88ui2ue 6 U I d I N V Z t : 6 t 0 0 Z 'Zl 0 Graph A 2.0 1.5 1.0 0 U. 0.5 0.0 J-" .1-ee Lee J-87 J-51 J-89 J-90 J-81 J-92 4.99 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 0.0 J -87 J-87 M -87 A -87 M -87 J-87 J-87 A-87 "7 0.87 N-87 D-87 Runoff Hydrograph - Eagle 1964 to 1993 (22 ac 0 80% impervious - USEPA SWM output) Runoff from 2.2 ac - Eagle, CO 1007 80°/fii Imp. Stormceptor is designed for ease of inspection and maintenance. It has been designed so that the access opening is oriented directly above the oil cleanout port and the riser pipe, This gives direct access to the treatment chamber of inspection and servicing from the top, thus eliminating the requirement for anyone to make a confined space entry into the unit, In -Line Stormceptor You can inspect and maintain the In -Line Stormceptor from the surface, without entry into the unit. Perform maintenance once the stored volume reaches 15% of the Stormceptor capacity, or immediately in the event of a spill. Maintenance intervals vary depending on the application. Therefore, we recommend quarterly inspections during the first year of installation, so you can accurately establish the maintenance schedule. Remove oil and sediment through the 24 -inch diameter outlet riser pipe. Alternatively, you may remove flostables and hydrocarbons through the 6 -inch oil inspection port, The requirements for disposal from Stormceptor are similar to that of any other Best Management Practice (BMP). Consult local guidelines prior to disposing the separator contents. The In -Line Stormceptor has been applied numerous times as an NPDES Phase I BMP, and is an ideal solution for communities dealing with NPDES Phase II Regulations. Inlet Stormceptor You can inspect and maintain the Inlet Stormceptor from the surface, without entry into the unit, Perform maintenance once the stored volume reaches 15% of the Stormceptor capacity, or immediately in the event of a spill. Maintenance intervals vary depending on the application. Therefore, we recommend quarterly inspections during the first year of installation, so you can accurately establish the maintenance schedule The inlet drop pipe has a tapered insert connected to a handle Once you remove the Inlet drop pipe Insert' and inlet orift with the handle, remove oil and sediment from the 12 -inch diameter inlet drop pipe The requirements for disposal from Stormceptor are similar to that of any other Best Management Practice (BMP). Consult local guidelines prior to disposing the separator contents. Page 1 of 1 £I 'd 6t WON ,Oul '2u1a88u12ua auldle NVW6 Mz 'zPM Model PI Invert to bottom of Stormceptor (In.
