Chief Building Official Town of Vail 75 South Frontage Road West Vail, CO 81657 Re: Vail Trails Condominium Dear Mr. Haeberle: This letter is in response to matters raised by David Lyle, P.E. concerning the adequacy of combustion air intakes and flue venting at the Vail Trails Condominium complex. The April 2011 report issued by Chason Energy relied on flue vent tables published by Simpson Dura -Vent Co. Inc, but did not, unfortunately, take into account de- rating of those capacities due to horizontal lengths and the fact that corrugated flue liner was used in the installation. While the installation has provided adequate venting as shown by flue gas testing and the fact that no carbon monoxide alarms have occurred, the installation does not meet the requirements of the International Flue Gas Code, 2009. I have reevaluated the installation using the sizing table, including de- ratings of the installation. My findings are as follows: 1. The combustion air intakes are adequately sized. The code requires one square inch of intake for each 4,000 Btu of burner input. Mr. Lyle used 2,000 Btu input per square inch of intake. The difference is in the fact that Lyle assumed horizontal ductwork. All ducts are vertical, so the 4,000 Btu per square inch standard applies. 2. Flue capacities have been recalculated using the Dura -Vent Table 4 from their Sizing Handbook, and the de- rating factors shown for horizontal travel length and corrugations. In some cases, the present installation is adequate, in others modifications to the venting is required. Results of the changes are shown on Tables 1 -3 (attached). 3. Horizontal venting changes consist of increasing the sizes of the vents. Vertical capacity increases are accomplished using in -line draft inducers upstream of the elbows connecting horizontal and vertical flue vents. Draft inducer operation employs a control system which is wired to each burner, so that when any burner is activated, the inducer fan operates. 4. Changes to the venting installations are shown as shaded areas in the tables.
