The design team and the owner representatives from Solaris have had numerous meetings with the Town
of Vail Building and Fire Department related to the use of `G1uLam Wood Beams' 40 feet above grade on
the exterior of the building. The use of the G1uLam Wood Beams at these locations would be used in lieu
of the currently approved administrative modification indentifying heavy timber elements on the exterior
of the building. Currently the Town of Vail Building and Fire Department have approved the second
Administrative Modification as modified on October 4, 2007 and again on April 8, 2008.
The intent of this document is to delete Item #4 as previously approved with this replacement lan u�age
and the attached `colored' elevations and the detailed desi�n drawings which will be submitted at a later
date by architect and contractor. This modification is specifically ]imited to Item #4.

Section 603.1 item #16 of the International Building Code (referencing Section 602.4.7) allows the use of
heavy timber for Type I and Type II construction of exterior structural members when conformance to
heavy timber minimum dimensions is made. IBC Section 602.4 implies that laminated wood members are
interchangeable with solid wood members as long as the same conformance to heavy timber minimum
dimensions is made. The 2006 edition of the IBC clarifies equivalency of solid sawn wood member
minimum sizes (minimal sizes) with glue lami�tated minimum sizes (net size) in the new IBC Table 602.4
below:

This correspondence will document the use of GluLam Wood Beams above 40 feet as indicated on the
attached building elevations. The detailed design of these G1uLam Wood Beams is proceeding based on
the following criteria:
• None of the G1uLam wood timber elements are used for structura] support of the building. The
G1uLam members will be designed to support their own weight and will be attached to the
building.
• The G1uLam wood timber members will comply with the minimum dimensions described above
in IBC Table 602.4. The minimum GluLam timber dimensions on Solaris will be no less than 6
inches x 8 inches.
• The use of such elements on the exterior of the building will be in accordance with drawing
elevations and detail shop drawings depicting the location and size of the exterior GluLam Wood
Members. The complete submittal of these elevations and detail drawings will be submitted to
the Town of Vail for review and approval in February 2009.
• The location and size of the proposed elements on the exterior of the building are not perceived to
cause a`Chain of Fue]' continuity contributing to the spread of fire on the exterior of the
building. The current design appears to meet the intent of what IBC Section 1406.2.2 is trying to
prevent.
• As previously discussed the administrative modification excluded the use of GluLam wood
members due to potential delamination or separating of layers due to weather�ag or exposure to
fire. Schirmer Engineering and the Solaris Ownership have researched the issue of delamination
due to weathering and found that this would not be an issue. This research and documentation
will be provided under separate covei� as part of this report.
• Al] combustible trim as shown on the attached elevations will be fire retarded treated.

Conclusion:
The current April 4, 2008 Item #4 Administrative Modification has been deleted. The design team is now
proceeding with the design and use of G1uLam Wood Members no less than 6 inches x 8 inches on the
exterior of the building 40 feet above finished grade. The specific details of the use of these G1uLam
Beams will be provided by the architect and Solaris in February 2009.
