Box 373 Vail, Colorado 81658 paulsna,gsconco.com Job No. 112 l O5A Subject: Observation of Footing Pad Excavation, Proposed Deck Addition, 146 Forest Road, Vail, Colorado Dear Paul: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on May 7, 2012 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our agree�nent for professional engineering services to George Shaeffer Construction, dated Apri126, 2012. A single footing pad is proposed to support the deck addition to the east side of the house. The deck addition is located in an existing unused decorative water feature consisting of a flow channel and boulders. ' � . . We previously observed the excavation on Aprid 26, 2012 and found it to be based in old fill at a depth of 4 to 5'/z feet. At the time of our current visit to the site, the footing pad excavation had been deepened in one level from 6 to 8 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of clayey sandy gravel and boulders. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were mo ist. The existing fill had been removed down to the natural soils. A footing pad placed on the natural soils and designed for the assumed bearing pressure of 3,000 psf can be used for support of the deck addition. Backfill should be placed in thin lifts and compacted to at least 90%of standard Proctor density. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our o�ce.
