Dear Steve:
ccrd has been retained to evaluate the life safety implications of removing an existing set of
double doors leading from the Gallery Space to Atrium A at the Sebastian Vail hotel in Vail,
Colorado. These doors were originally installed to provide a one-hour fire barrier as required by
the 2003 IBC Section 404.5. The Town of Vail has since adopted the 2009 IBC, and Exception 3 of
that same section now states that adjacent spaces of any three floors of the atrium are not
required to be separated from the atrium where such spaces are accounted for in the design of
the smoke control system. This exception requires an evaluation of the potential impact of a fire
developing in a space adjacent to the atrium (not separated by a one-hour fire barrier) on the
atrium smoke control system.
Based on the provisions of the 2009 IBC,we have evaluated the potential impact of a fire
developing in the Gallery space on the smoke control system. The original atrium smoke control
calculations performed by R1A in 2006 considered a sprinkler controlled fire developing in the Rear
Lobby to determine the required atrium exhaust rate. That fire size was established based on
sprinkler activation calculations with a ceiling height of 19 feet,which is the highest elevation of
the barrel vault ceiling in the Rear Lobby. The resulting fire size was approximately 1000 kW. In
order to evaluate the impact of a fire developing in the Gallery, similar sprinkler activation
calculations were performed and, due to a lower ceiling height and slower fire growth rate, a
smaller fire size of approximately 700 kW was established. These calculations are in accordance
with NFPA 72 Annex B for fire detection design. The following inputs were used:

By solving the response time until the detector temperature equals the activation temperature,
the following results were produced:

Activation time 4.02 minutes
The axisymmetric fire plume calculation originally used to determine the required exhaust rate in
the Rear Lobby is driven primarily by fire size. When that same calculation is performed with the
smaller fire size in the Gallery,the resulting required exhaust rate is less than that included in the
current design. In other words, due to a lower ceiling height and similar or lesser fire hazards, a
smaller size fire is anticipated in the Gallery,therefore the smoke control system in Atrium A will
not be compromised by a fire in an adjacent space. Therefore, fire separation between the
Gallery will not be necessary to accomplish the design intent of the code.
Based on the above analysis,these doors may be removed in accordance with the included
construction documents. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
