RE: Effect of Added Roof Load on Building Structure- 4220 Spruce Way
Dear Maryalice:
At your request, we have investigated the effect of adding a metal roof on the roof structure
of the residence located at 4220 Spruce Way in Vail, Colorado. A description of the scope
of our investigation and our conclusions are presented below.
Scope of Investigation
As you know, our firm provided structural engineering services for the addition to the
residence which was constructed in 2008. We did not provide services for design of the
original building which appears to have been constructed in 1992, based on drawings
provided to us. In pursuing our investigation we relied on our in-house records of the
design of the 2008 addition, on drawings which you provided to us for the original
construction and on the attached drawing showing the proposed roofing method.
Conclusions
We have estimated the additional load from the proposed new roofing to be approximately
3 pounds per square foot. Our review of the design criteria which we used in the design of
the roof structure for the recent addition indicates that the roof weight that we assumed
exceeds that of the existing shingles plus the weight of the proposed new system.
We analyzed representative elements of the original roof structure as presented in the
drawings that you provided. Based on that analysis, it our opinion that the minimal weight
of the proposed new roofing will not significantly affect the structural capacity of the
original roof structure.
It is, therefore, our opinion that the existing roof structure has sufficient capacity to support
the weight of the new roofing system, as defined on the attached roof plan.
Limitations
Our investigation pertains only to structurll effects of the added roofing weight. We have
no expertise in roofing design and, therefore, have not commented on the adequacy of the

proposed new roofing system to resist moisture penetration. Nor have we analyzed the
structural aspects of the proposed new roofing.
Our investigation of the capacity of the original roof structure is based on information
provided on the original drawings which you provided to us. We have not verified that the
roof structure was constructed as drawn. Nor have we verified that the original framing is
in good condition.

Asbestos Testing &Abatement Requirements '
Asbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders from ex-
posure to harmful asbestos. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly
for their requirements at the contact info listed below.
When is asbestos testina reauired?
ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing:
One-and Two-Family Dwellings: 32 square feet
Alf Others (commercial spaces, hotel rooms, etc): 160 square feet
Definition of a single-family dwelling: any dwelling unit that is used primarily for a single family, including
multi-family/condominium units,and fractional fee units.
Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.
Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State-certified abatement contractor. The
air clearance letter or form must be submitted to the Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued.

Tips&Facts:
• Even recent construction projects may include asbestos-containing materials, so buildings of�age require testing.
• The "1989 Ban" on asbestos-containing materials is commonly misunderstood. "In fact, in 1991 the U.S. Fifth Circuit
Court of Appeals vacated much of the so-called "Asbestos Ban and Phaseout" rule and remanded it to the EPA. Thus,
much of the original 1989 EPA ban on the U.S. manufacturing, importation, processing, or distribution in commerce

D&D Environmental Consulting,Inc.(D&D)is pleased to provide the results of the walk-through and collection of
representative bulk samples of suspect asbestos materials impacted by the interior renovation activities at ihe above
referenced structure.The walk-throu�h,collection of representative bulk samples,and deli��ery of the bulk samples
to an independent analy�tical laboratory were completed on January 6,2012 by a D&D Building Inspector,certified
and aecredited by the Environmental Protection A�ency(EPA)and the State of Colorado.
UNDERSTANDING &SCOPE OF WORK
D&D understands that a representative of J.L.Viele Construction was seeking a professional environmental
consultin�company to conduct a walk-through to view and collect representative bulk samples of suspect asbestos
containing materials impacted by the interior renovation activities and submit the bulk samples to an independent
analytical laboratory for asbestos content analysis based on standard turnaround time.This report of findings was
prepared based on the asbestos content report from the analytical laboratory.
ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES
The bulk samples coilected of suspect asbestos containing materials were delivered to Aerobiology Laboratory
Associates,Ine.a National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Progra�n(NVLAP}asbestos laboratory located in
Lakewood,Colorado for standard turnaround time analysis. All bulk samples are archived for six-months unless
otherwise stipulated Uy the client.
According to the analyrtical laboratory,the bulk samples were analyzed in accardance with EPA Method 600/R-
93/116. Small portions ofthe sample were placed in Series: E High Dispersion Refractive Index Liquid on a
microscope slide. The prepared samples were observed at l 00X(power)under polarized light using a McCrone
Dispersion Staining Objective. The characteristics of the fibers were compared to the known properties of asbestos
fibers for dispersion color,polarity,extinction and general morphology. Sample content{given by percentage)was
made by visual estimates by comparison of asbestos fibers to total materials.
RESULTS
The US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA),the Occupational Safery and Health Administration(OSHA),and
the State of Colorado Air Quality Control Commission considers a material as asbestos containing if the reported
amount of asbestos is greater than one-percent. According to the analy2ical report,the representative bulk samples
collected of suspect ACM's potentially impacted by the interior renovation activities were reported as none detected

RECOMMEIVDATfONS AND SUMMARY
Based on the analyticai report,the drywalL'drywall joint compound,carpet inastic,and pipe sealant�vill not require
special handling prior to commencin�the interior renovation activities. If additional suspect asbestos containing
materials are identified during thc demolition/renovations,all activities must stop until these materials are sampled.
Work shall not resume until the results are reported and removal completed, if required.
D&D's liability for this renovation asbestos survey conducted at 1377 Vail Valley Drive, Vail,Colorado, is limited
