Dear Tom:
On Friday March 9, we observed the existing plexi-glass roof of the south elevator tower. The
purpose of the observation was to measure the existing panels to size replacement glass panels.
There are five panels that form the roof of the elevator tower. The largest panel is approximately
6 ft wide by 5 ft long. All the plexi-glass panels are supported by 4x4 steel tubes on all four
sides.
We used IBC 2009 Chapter 24 and ASTM E 1300-09 "Standard Practice for Determining Load
Resistance of Glass in Buildings" to determine the type of glass required and allowable loading
for the glass. The Town of Vail snow load requires a 100 psf flat roof snow load. We
determined that a one month load duration was appropriate for the maximum load to be applied
to the exposed and uninsulated glass roof. Calculations on the largest glass panel determined
that the glass roof must be 5/8" thick laminated heat strengthened glass or 1/2" thick laminated
fully tempered glass conforming to ASTM C 1048. The heat strengthened glass would provide a
better solution for the roof as it is more likely to develop single cracks as opposed to the
spiderweb cracking pattern of tempered glass.
