Dear Mr. Faessler: As requested, a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavations at the subject site on June 16 and 17, 2005 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. We previously conducted geotechnical studies for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in reports dated May 17, 2002 and December 8, 2004, Job No. 102 223. The proposed addition will consist of a three story structure underlain by a basement and parking garage. Spread footings sized for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 5,000 psf were recommended in our previous report. At the time of our initial visit to the site, we observed the foundation excavations for a continuous footing located between N and M and 104.5 and 107.3. The foundation excavation had been cut in one level from 2 to 2 1 /2 feet below slab grade. On June 17, we observed a continuous footing excavation along Z line between 0 and 106 that had been cut in three levels between 1 /2 and 2 feet below slab grade. The slab subgrade is up to about 17 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavations consisted of slightly silty to silty sandy gravel with scattered cobbles. The soil conditions observed in the excavations are consistent with those previously encountered on the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 5,000 psf. Loose and disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas to expose the undisturbed natural gravel soils. Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter.
