The bedrock, however, ls blankefed (except for ihe rock bluffs) by slopevash and
talus solls down bo about Llons Ridge Road. BeloH Llons Rtdge Road a Hest-
souLhHesL trending riclge spur of glaclal moralne ls plasLered agalnst the foot of
the slope (Fleure 2). The sandstones typlcally are flne-gralned and fLne to
coarse-gralned. They are tocally conglomerat,lc, thin to nasslYe bedded, ueak Bo
stron8, and the JoinLs are widely spaced. The llnestone 1s flne-gralned to
mlcrocryslalllne, slrong to very strong, thlck-bedded and nlth Jotnts wldely
spaced. The unconftned compresslve strengths of bhe sandstones probably range
from 10,000 psl to 15,000 psi, whereas those of the llmeslone range probably to
30,000 psi. The shale unlts typlcally range fron seams ulthln the sandstones to
thin-bedded unils up to a fooL or 9o thiek. Those thicker unlts, however, ane
rare. The unconflned conpressive strengths of the shales probably range betueen
2,000 psi ancl 6,000 psi.
The slopewash and talus soils are unstratlfled, sandy, gravel1y, cobbley clay
Hlth scaELered boulders. ThIs 1s malnly sandstone debrls. The solls form an
apron developed below the sandsLone bluffs down to Lions Rldge Loop, thus range
from a Hedge-edge upslope to probably as mueh as 10 !o 20 fee! thick adiacent to
the road. These solls have been deposlted prlmarlly by sheet rrash' ihus ane
expected to range from loose to nedlum dense, and probabfy are subJect Lo
dl fferential sebLlement when UeLted.
South of Llons Ridge Loop, bhe gl.aclal moralne 5oils are princlpally a hetero-
geneous nj.xture cf sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders ln a sllt to clay matrlx.
The soils include both sandsLone and granltic rock debrls.
