and foundation investlgatlon for a proposed residential struc-
ture to be located in the Big Eorn Strbdivision on Lot I0,
Block 2 in East VaLl, Colorado. The slte wil-l be occuPled
by the proposed I{ill-ard residence.

structed with a conerete slab on grade. The walls of the
first story Wilt be of nasonry construction. 'Ihe second floor
q,i1l contain wood frame walls and floors. The proposed resi-
dence vtlll be approxlnatel-y 30 feet by 33 feet in plan. The
weight of ths proi)osed structure will be carried by e:cterior
Loail bearlng watl"s as vrell as an interior load bearing wall
running the entire l<rngth of the Etructure. The anuclpated
loads wi't l be ltght to moderate.
The solls encountered on the gite
are generalty of a coll-uviaL and alluvlal natule and are of
modeiately high density. The site is located on the floor of
the GOrO Creek vallelz alrd ls sltuated on a terraee deposl-ted
by the Gore Creek. the alluvlal soile on the site have been
dlposited by the actlon of Gore creek ln the past. lrhe scils
encountered on the site nay be grouPed under one bro<-rd classl"-
fication.

Soll Bype No. I is classifted as a silty.sand. ft is guite coarse in nature and of moderately high density.
It is typlcally ltght brown in color and contains a fair amount of
boulder, cobble and gravel slzed material. The presence of these
large boulders may make deep excavations very difficult. The soil is non-plastie and non-expansive. At a minimum depth of 4 to 5 feet
below the pres_ent ground surface, this material was found to have a
maximum allowable bearing capacity of 2500 psf. No mininum dead
load pressure is required on thls material.
A free water sutrface qras establiehed at
B feet below the present ground surface. Thie water table is at the
approximate elevation of the water in Gore Creek which flows about
300 feet to the north of the construction site. During times of
abnormalLy htgh flow ln Gore Creek, this free water surface may rise to approximately foundation level. Ilowever, no partieular problems
are anticipated if the allowable bearing of this material Ls,not
exceeded.
The bedrock in the area consists of the
Minturn formation which is a red and gray, grltty conglomerate sand-
etone and limestone and some granitic rocks. The depth to bedrock
beneath the construction site ig expected to be great and it should
not affect the foundations of the proposed structure. The construetion slte is located in the Gore fault zone. The faults are felt to be
inactive at present and shouLd pose no partS-cular problem from a structural s tandpoint.
The depth of the foundatlon systern requirecl for frost protection in this area is on the order of 4 feet. At this depth, the foundation system will rest in Soil Type No. I and
the footings should be proportioned on the basis of a maximum allow-
able bearing eapacity of 25OO psf. SettLenent in this material
should be re.l-atively minor if the material is not overloaded. ID
addition, any settlements which may occur wlll be falrly rapid and will be very nearJ-y dissipated by the end of the construction period.
The poseibility of areas of low denslty
or compressible material being located beneath foundation level Lg
always present in alluvial- terface depoeits such as those beneath this site, Although none were encountered in the single te6t plt
which was excavated on the site, the presenee of these area6 should
be aseumed in the design of the structure. Because of this, foun-
dation pressures should be balanced to within a300 psf beneath aLl
Ioad bearlng walls, Foundation pade for isolated interlor columng or piers, if any, should be proportioned on the basis of a contact
pressutre of 200 psf leso than the average used for the exterior walle.

Criterla for balancing should be on the basis of dead load plus
one-half llve load. In an effort to briclge across any soft sPotot
all foundation stem walls should be designed as grade beams capable
of spanning at least 10 feet. Reinforcing should be placed at both
top and bottom of the grade beam, with the major reinforcing at Lhe
bottom. A Type II Cement is recom:nended for use in alt concrete In
contact with the eoils on this site. Under no cirsumstances should
calcium chloride ever be used in Type rr Cement.
Any floor slabs may be placed directly
on graile. Ilowever, a compacted gra'rel bed of 4 to 6 inches in thick-
ness may be used if desired. If used, this gravel- bed must be glven
free drainage to the surface and must not be allowed to trap water
beneath the floor slab. In additton, the floor sLab should be con-
structed to act free and independent of any bearing walls or interior
columns. Deep construction or contraction joints should be plaeed
in the slab to facilitate even breakage and thus help reduce un-
sightly cracking to a minimum. lFhese joints should divide the slab
into sections of no more than 3C feet on a side.
Any topsoil or debris should be removed
from the construction area prior to beginning construction of the
foundation. In addition, should any pockets of debris, organic
material, or very loose material be encountered during excavation
of the footings, this material should be removed and repLaced wlth
backfitl compacted to a mlnimum of 95% of Standard Proctor maximum
dry density, ASTM D-698.
Backfill around the proposed structure
and in utility trenches should be eompacted to at least 9W of
maximum Proctor density. The native soils may be used for this
purpose, if the iarger boulder and cobble sized nnaterial is reraoved.
Material- should be placed in lifts not to exceed 5 to I inehee com-
pacted thickness and at a moisture content approximately equal to
the optimum Proctor moistuEe contentr plus or minus 2%. In areas
. where the foundation may rest on backfill, the soil should be com-
pacted to at least 95% of maximum Proctor density. Baekfill should
be compacted tO the required density by meehanical means. NO r.rater
flooding techniques of any type should be used in the placement of
backfill on the site.
!{hen stem walls will retain soll Ln excess
of 4 feet in helght, vertical reinforcement may be necessary and
ehouLd be designed, To design such vertical reinforcingr the equl-
valent fluid pressure of these eoila should be taken as 45 pcf.
