NOTES TO ALL APPLICANTS
Pre-apolication Meetino
A pre-application meeting with Town of Vail staff is encouraged. The purpose of a pre-application meeting is to
identify any critical issues pertaining to the applicant's proposal and to determine the appropriate development
review process for an application. In many cases, the pre-application meeting helps to expedite the
development review process as critical issues are identified and dealt with in the preliminary stages. A pre-
application meeting may be scheduled by contacting Joe Suther at970.479.2L28 or jsuther@vailgov.com.
Time Requircments
The Design Review Board meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. A complete application form
and all accompanying material must be accepted by the Community Development Department prior to
application deadlines. A schedule of DRB meetings and associated application deadlines may be found on the
World Wide Web at htto://ci.vail.co.usicornmdev/planningidrb/meetinos/default.htm For a new residential
development, the application deadline is typically 3.5 weeks prior to a Design Review Board hearing.
Review Criteria
The proposal will be reviewed for compliance with the Design Guidelines as set forth in Title t2, (Zoning
Regulations) and Title 14 (Development Standards) of the Town of Vail Municipal Code.
Reouirements for orooefties located in hazard areas
If a property is located in or adjacent to a mapped hazard area (i.e. snow avalanche, rockfall, debris flow,
floodplain, wetland, poor soils, etc.), the Community Development Department may require a site-specific
geological investigation. If a site-specific geological investigation determines that the subject property is located
in a geologically sensitive area, the property owner(s) must sign an affidavit recognizing the hazard report prior
to the issuance of a building permit. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with Community
Development staff prior to submitting a DRB application to determine the relationship of the propefi to all
mapped hazards.
Required Plan Sheet Format
For all surveys, site plans, landscape plans and other site improvement plans, all of the following must be
shown.
Plan sheet size must be24"x 36". For large projecG, larger plan size may be allowed.
Scale. The minimum scale is 1"=20'. All olans must be at the same scale.
Graphic bar scale.
Nofth arrow.
Title block, project name, project address and legal description.
Indication of plan preparer, address and phone number.
Dates of original plan preparation and all revision dates.
Vicinity map or location map at a scale of 1"=1,000'or larger,
Sheet labels and numbers.
A border with a minimum left side margin of 1.5".
Names of all adjacent roadways.
Plan legend.
Desion Review Board Meetinq Requirements
For new construction and additions, the applicant must stake and tape the project site to indicate property lines,
proposed buildings and builtling corners. All trees to be removed must be taped. The applicant must ensure
that staking done during the winter is not buried by snow, All site tapings and staking must be completed prior
to the day of the DRB meeting.

to appear before the Design Review Board on their scheduled meeting date and who have not asked in advance

that discussion on their item be postponed, will have their items removed from the DRB agenda until
as the item has been republished.
If the DRB approves the application with conditions or modifications, all conditions of approval must be
prior to the issuance of a building permit.
Staff Aoproval
The Administrator (a member of the planning stafQ may review and approve Design Review a
approve with certain modifications, deny the application, or refer the application to the Design Review
a decision. All staff approvals are reviewed by the Design Review Board and any staff decision is
final approval by the DRB.
Additional Review and Fees
If this application requires a separate review by any local, state or Federal agency other than the Town
the application fee shall be increased by $200.00. Examples of such review, may include. but are not
Colorado Department of Highway Access Permits, Army Corps of Engineers 404, etc.
The applicant shall be responsible for paying any publishing fees in excess of 50o/o of the application

Applications deemed by the Community Development Department to have design, land use or other

Once a building permit has been issued, and construction is underway, and before the Building Department will
schedule a framing inspection, two copies of an Improvement Location Certificate survey (ILC) stamped by a
registered professional engineer must be submitted. The following information must be provided on the ILC:. Basis of bearing and tie to section corner . All property pins found or set . Building location(s) with ties to property corners (ie. distances and angles). Building dimensions, including decks and balconies, to the nearest tenth of a foot . be provided urith a low water cutoff devlce either as a
parl of lfte boiler or at th€ time of boiler installalion, fig. 8.
The boilei, when used in connection with a refrigera-
tion system, must be installed so the chilled medium is
piped in parallel with the boiler with appropriate valves
lo pr€vent'lhe chilled madium from entering the boiler.
The boiler piping system ol a hot water boiler con-
n€c'ted to healing coils locatEd in air handlang units
where they may be exposed to refrigerated air circula-
tion must be equipped with flow control valyes or other
automalic means to prevent gravity circulation ol lhe
boiler water during the ctoling cycle.
Install the pr€ssure relief valve as shorrn in fig. 4. The
relief l/alve must be installed per ANSUASME Boiler
and Pressure Vessel Code. Section lV. The stem of the
relief vatue must be mounted vErtically. Pipe the dis-
charge full port to a lloor drain. Follow good pipang
practic€s psr local codes.

bustible walls of croset
Water Tre*nent
A water analysis shonld be done on the water that will
be us€d to fill the svstem. Treatnent rnay be required
depending on the analysis results. For €xtremely hard
water or pH belof, 7,O consult youf local water treat- i
rient company.
8. Eectricalsupply
The electical connections to this boiler must be
madE in accordance with all applacable local codes
and lhe current edition of the Nlafional Eloctical Code,
ANSI/NFPA-70. Installation should also conform with
CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code Part I it installed
in Canada
The boiler must be electrically grounded in accordance
with lhe requiremenF of the authodty having jurisdic-
tion or, in the absence of such r€quirements, with
lhe drrrent edition ot the Natonal E|ecfical Code,
ANSUNFPA 70.
A shutofl sn ilch should be located at the boiler.
Cauton: Label all wires prior to disconnection when
s€.vicing confols. Wiring etrors can cause improper
and dangerous oparation.

9. Gas Supply
Gas connections
Debrmine the proper gas pipe size needed for the
installation using tables 2 and 3. Do not neglect the
pipe fitting loses.
A sediment trap must be installed at the inlet of the gas
supply. piping to the boiler. When local codes require, a
manual shutoff vatue must be install€d outside the
boiler jacket- it is recommended that a manual shutoff
valve be installed on the main gas piping to the boiler.
The gas piping must be supported extemal lo the
boiler, see fig. 9-
when installing the gas supply connection, it must
comply with the local regulations or, if such regulations
do not exisl, with the cunent edition ot the National
Fuel Gas Code, ANSI 2223.1.
In Canada, the gas supply connection must comply
with local regulations or, if such regulations do nol
exist with CAN/CGA-8149. 1 or 2 lnstaltation Guideti-
nes.
WARNING
Do not check for gas leaks with an open flame - use
soap and water solution. Failure to do so can cause
severe personal injury, death or substantial property
damage-

When an existing boiler is removed ftom a common
venting system, the common venting system is likely to
be too large tor proper venting ot the appliances
remaining connecled lo iL
At the time of removal of an existing boiler, the lollow-
ing steps shall be followed with each appliance
remaining connected lo the common venung system
placed in operaton, while the other appliances remain-
ing connected to the common venting system are nol in
operation.
(a) Seal any unused openings in the conmon veniing
system.
(b) Visually inspect the venting system for proper size
and fiorizontaf pitch and determ,ne there is no
blockage or restriction, leakage, conosion and
other deliciencies which could cause an unsate
condition.
{c) lnsofar as is prac,tical, close all building doors and
windows and all doors between the space in which
the appliances remaining connected to the com-
mon venfing system are located and other spaces
of the building. Tum on clothes dryers and any
appliance not conn€ctpd to the common venting
systerD. Tum on any , , Jst tans, such as range

(d) Place in operation the appliance being inspected.
Follow the lighting instructions. Adiust thermostat
so appliance will operate continuously.

2223-1. tl,lhen resizing any portion of the common
venting system, the comhon venting system should
be r€siz€d to approach the minimum size as deter-
mined using the appropriate tables in Part 11 in
lhe Nauonal Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z 223.1 current
edition.

12. Vent Piping Assembly
The adapter collar provided must be installed withgui
alteration. The dratt hood must nol b€ altered in arty
way. Install the adapter collar on the drafl tqql outlet
section. Drill three holes into the flue colvffiltE dren
hood and secure the adapter collar witli three (31 cor-
rosion resistant sheet metal screws.

1. Turn ofi all electric power to the boiler and set
thermostat to lowest setting.
2. Check the combustion air and ventilation openings"
3- Fif the boiler system wilh water and purge the air
kom the piping and radialion.
4. Remove the control access panel.
5. Open the main Sas ptpins shutoff valve.
6. Test the gas piping on the side of gas conbol for
leaks by applying a soap and urater solution. lf no
leaks are found go to step 8. lf any leaks are
found, shut off the main gas piping shutoff valve-
7. Repair leaks and repeat step 6.
8. Shut off the main gas supply shutoff valve.
Remove the line pressure tapping plug lrom one of
the gas controls, fig. 10; instafi a test fitting ancl
hook up a manometer so that line pressurL can be checked.
9. Remove the manitold pressure tapping plug from
both gas confols, instatt a t€st fiftings and hook up
two manometers so that manifold pressure can be
checked, fig. 10.
10. Open the main gas F,ipang shutoff vahye and
mEasure the supply pressure lo the boiler. The
supply pressure must be between Z and 1O.5
inches wat€r column for natural gas or 11 and 13
inch€s water column for propane gas. lf pressure is
not between P and 10.5'for natural gas or !1 and
13 inches lor progane, ca your seMce t€chnician
or gas supplier

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION: Each installation must confonn to all local, state End national codes. Refer to the national fuel gas code and
local zoning and code authorities for details on installation requirements. {po Mendota Inscrts must be vontcd to the outsidc
in accordance with the latest edition of tbe National Fuel Gas Code. In the absence of local codes, the installation must
conform with National Fuel Gas Code ANSI 2223.1 1992 or most crrrent edition, also known as NFPA 54.
l.Remove glass doors, metal fire screens, etc. from existing fireplace. Be sure therc is 20" minimum distarce
from upper grill to bottom of mantel, see Specifications [Pg. 5], and 16" minimum non-combustible hearth"
extension.
Remove any additional framework or other obstructions in the existing fireplace opening and burning area.
Also remove any chimney cap from top of chimney so that vent liner can be installed freely.
Before Insert is installed, have gas supplier or contractor run gas line to the existing fireplace. Be sure gas
plumbing instructions [see Pg. | 5 & 16l are carefully followed. Gas supply may enter fireplace on either
side or back of fireplace, wbichever is most convenient and accessible. Electrical service ( I l5 volt) should
also be supplied [See electrical requirements on Pg. 4 and blower instructions on Pg. 27].
The entire chimney should be swept to remove creosote, soot and any foreign obstructions (bird nests, etc.).
5. Open fireplace damper. If damper opening is large enough tg accept a 4" flue liner, permanently secure
damper in "open" position. .d6r,(t/ fetrwuefl |
6. If damper opening is too small for the 4" [02 mm] flue liner, it will be necessary to remove the damper
handle and the damper plate. Some damper plates are held in place by a pinned hinge which can be released
easily by tapping out the pin with a hammer and punch. Others may be held in place by a screw or bolt, or
pivots may be cast into the damper housing. The latter types may be harder to get out and may require
sawing or breaking out. INOTE: if flue size is 5" (127 mm) or less, or if severe offsets occur, or a
significant mortar slop is evident between the liners, try to snake liner down the chimney to the top of the
damper housing before breaking out damper plate and housing.l
CAUTION: If a 4" flue liner cannot be installed in an extremely tight chimney DO NOT proceed with
installation.
If damper opening is narrower than 4-112" to 5'(114 mm to 127 mm) and if local code authorities allow,
loosen and rremove mortar behind back side of damper housing in the center of the opening enough to get the
gripping teeth ofa pipe wrench over the flange ofthe damper housing (for cast iron housings). Tighten the
wrench snugly, and kick down on the wrench handle to break out a half moon shaped piece ofthe damper
housing, enough to easily fit the flex liner through it. If the opening is wide enough, the break out is not
necessafy.
Measure the chimney height from the top of the chimney (or the existing flue liner) to a point 26" (661 mm)
for MIG-40 or 20" (508 mm) for MIG-32 above the floor of the fireplace hearth. [See Figure 6] It may be
necessary to drop a rope and measure the rope itself. Be sure to allow for all offsets in existing chimney.

232 tempered glass with all exposed
edges rounded and polished. Roller
bearings, hinges, silencers, handles,

alloy, R-5 and anodized.

seal at both ihe hinge and latch iambs,
and a sloping, adjustable anti-splash
