A.
A pre-application meeting with a member of the planning staff is strongly encouraged t.o determine if any additional application information is needed. It i_s the applicant, s responsibility to make an appointment with the staff to det.ermine if there are additional subrnittal requirements.Please note that a COMPLETE application will streamline the approval process for your project.
In addition to meeting submittal requirements, the applicant must stake and tape the project site to indicate property lines, building lines and building corners. A11 trees to be removed must be taped. All site Lapings and st.aking must be completed prior to the
DRB site visit. The applicant must ensure that staking done durj.ng the winter is not buried by snow.
The review process for NEW BUILDINGS normally requires two separate meetj-ngs of the Design Review Board.: a conceptual approval and a final approval . Applicants should plan on presenting their development proposal at a minimum of two meetings before obtaining final approval.
Applicants who fail t.o appear before the Design Review Board on their scheduled meeting date and who have not.asked in advance that discussion on their item be postponed, will have t.heir it.ems removed from the DRB docket until such time as the item has been republished.
The following items may, at the discretion of the zoning administrator, be approved. by the Community Development Department staff (i,e. a formal hearino before the DRB may not be required):

As you requested in your letter of 815193, the following provides a loading analysis on
the new window on the Urano remodel at 5033 Snowshoe Lane, Vail. All other
avalanche hazard and structural considerations have been addressed in previous
studies, therefore, as you requested, they have been excluded from this study.
LOADS ON NEW WINDOW
The new window, as shown on your plans (Figure 'l) sent to me earlier this month, are
as follows:
Normal load (P*) -- 167 lbs/ft'?;
Shear load (P.) -- 84 lbs/ft?.
Because these loads increase over the window surface quickly (< 0,1 second time
interval for increase from zero to maximum), they should be evaluated as impact loads
by the structural engineer.
METHODOLOGY AND SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
The loads were computed by applying a 3-component, stochastic model of snow
avalanche motion to the Vail Meadows avalanche path, assuming that avalanche
stopped as determined in previous studies, and computing normal pressure and flow
thickness distributions at the window location (Figures 2 and 3). The normal
pressures during the three time intervals of maximum flow thickness (intervals 3, 4,
and 5) were averaged (average = 223 psfl to compute normal pressure on a flat
surface oriented at right angles to the flow. This pressure was then reduced to
account for the 60'deflection angle to the flow direction (correction factor = 0.75).
Figures 2 and 3 provide the avalanche-dynamics data used.

telqhone conversation last weelr, I can assure you that
. the above referenced lot is buildable. ft is, hcwrever,
irr a lloderate Ilazard Arzalanche Zone, wtrich requires an
avalanehe defense systern designed by a certified stnrc-
tural engineer.
It ts difficult to be speciflc on the type of defense
systeur that would be required for this lot. firis defense
systen is predicated on the pressure loads of the avalaache
as it crpsses the 1ot as specified in the avalanche study.
Sone pr"eviously used rethods include a soncrete dyke, the
increase in strength and size of foundation walls, and
angling the structure to deflect the avalandre path. The
rpthod which would work the best needs to be determined
by the structural engi-neer in conjructi-on with the p:ro-
posed design of the house.
