Subject: Observation of Footing Pad Excavations, Proposed Addition, 1370
Sandstone Drive, Unit 8, Eiger Chalets, Vail, Colorado
Dear Ivan:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on June 29, 2012 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the
foundation are presented in this report. We previously provided preliminary
recommendations for the foundation design in a report dated May 18, 2012, Job No.
112 071A.
The proposed construction is similar to that discussed in our previous report. The two
footing pads to support the addition have been designed assuming an allowable soil
bearing pressure of 2,500 psf, as previously recommended.
At the time of our site visit to the site, the foundation excavation for the two footing
pads had each been cut in one level about 4 feet below the adjacent ground surface.
The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavations consisted of consisted of relatively
dense, silty sand and gravel with cobbles and small to medium sized boulders. At the
southwestern footing pad excavation, two boulders were protruding from the side to
over the bottom of the excavation subgrade. The results of a gradation analysis
performed on a sample of the sand and gravel with cobble and boulder soils (minus 3
inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Figure 1. No free water was
encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist.
The soil conditions exposed in the excavations are consistent with those previously
anticipated at the site and suitable for support of footing pads designed for the
recommended bearing pressure of 2,500 psf. We understand the boulders protruding
into the southwestern footing excavation were removed to allow bearing on a relatively
level sub - grade. Loose and disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas to

expose the undisturbed natural coarse granular soils. Other recommendations presented
in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavations and did not include subsurface exploration at
the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavations could increase
the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered
in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this
letter.
