Box 1025 Gypsum, CO 81637 970.904.0621 happytreesllc@yahoo.com Date: July 23, 2012 To: Mark Menke, Project Manager, Colorado Constructors, Inc. From: Michael Scott, Happy Trees, LLC Re: Project recommendations for Matterhorn Bridge Replacement (TOV: PRJ11 -0598) L10 These recommendations are in total agreement and willing compliance to tree preservation protection guidelines sent in the email from Colorado Constructors, Inc. Happy Trees' specific recommendations are as such: - Prune (1) Picea pungens (approximately 55' tall) nearest the northwest corner of the bridge up to 10 vertical feet clearance; this will meet the 7' mandatory clearance for pedestrians as well as allowing clearance for large vehicles that are travelling across the bridge. This is also taking into consideration snow load on lateral limbs during winter months. Fell and remove all parts of (1) 50' Picea pungens due to proximity to the road as well as proximity to the sewer line that extends over Gore Creek. There is significant erosion of the soil within the dripline of the tree (i.e. within the upper soil horizons where the root system is located). The soil along Gore Creek to the north of the tree and its root system is highly eroded due to the lapping action of the creek. This erosive action has caused a shelf to be created allowing water to further erode the bank underneath the strata which holds the root system in place. This exacerbation will no doubt continue and further compromise the integrity of the root system and worsen an already hazardous situation. Considering the money and manpower going into this project we do not believe it to be a tolerable risk. - There is also another Picea pungens located on the NE corner of the bridge (approx. 15' — 20') that we recommend be relocated due to the root system's proximity to various utility lines located both above and beneath ground. There are several adjacent locations that are close to the tree itself that would be suitable relocation sites. Happy Trees' intention is to be present on -site as excavation and relocation is scheduled so that we might advise specific recommendations, do our best to remedy any damage as it occurs and to apply root inoculants and fertilizers to any damaged root systems or relocated trees. We have a very good track record with relocating trees and have found tree mortality to be mostly the result of improper excavation /relocation through the hands of the excavator, or lack of communication between all involved. Our intention is to work closely with the excavator in order to achieve all tree preservation and removal goals with minimal damage /loss incurred. We would like to organize tree removal with the equipment operator (and labor staff) so that the tree to be removed falls eastward along the road thereby avoiding the bus stop and adjacent over -head utilities. This way the felled tree can be bucked, limbed and removed from site as expeditiously as possible. Traffic crew will be needed in order to perform this operation as quickly as possible in order to maintain traffic flow and to cause minimal disturbance. We are a small yet capable company and will be reliant upon the aid of both traffic crew as well as excavatory equipment that is already present on -site in order to perform these tasks in both a timely and cost preventative manner. We would however; like to see a small replacement tree planted on the property. Thanks, Tug Birk Development Review Coordinator Eagle River Water and Sanitation District 970-477-5449 tbirk@erwsd.org From: Chad Salli [mailto:CSalli@vailgov.com] Sent: Friday, July 27, 2012 3:35 PM To: Roby Forsyth; Tug Birk Subject: matterhorn bridge Roby/Tug It has come up with the Matterhorn Bridge Project that one of the spruce trees located on the downstream left is a safety concern. It is leaning toward the bridge and the base of the tree has been undercut by the creek over the years and need to get cut down so that during construction or a stiff breeze it doesn’t come down on the bridge and sewer crossing. The tree is located on the District’s property, so therefore I need approval from you guys to cut it down for DRB approval. If you guys are ok with the project removing that tree, can you send me an email stating that. Let me know if you have any questions, or if you want to meet out there. thanks 1 Chad Salli, P.E.
