Subject: Observation of Eastern and Southern Portions of Excavation, Proposed
Residence, Lot 1, Eleni Zneimer Subdivision, 1677 Buttehr Creek Road,
Vail, Colorado
Dear Mike:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the east
and south portions of the excavation at the subject site on November 9, 2012 to evaluate
the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and
recommendations are presented in this report. The services were supplemental to our
agreement for professional engineering services to Scott S. Turnipseed, AIA, dated
September 26, 2012.
We previously observed the foundation excavation for the western and northern portions
of the proposed residence and'submitted our findings in a report dated September 27,
2012 under the above job number. The building has been designed to be supported on
spread footings using an allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,000 psf based on a previous
soils report by Koechlein Consulting Engineers.
At the time of our site visit, the foundation excavation for the eastern and southern
portions of the residence was nearly complete and had been cut in two levels fi-om about 2
to 4 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The southeastern corner of the excavation
was not complete at this time. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation
consisted of medium dense, silty sand and gravel with cobbles and scattered small
boulders. The soils were too rocky to obtain undisturbed samples for swell - consolidation
testing. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were generally
moist.
The soils are similar to those encountered in Boring 1 of the Koechlein study and
previously observed by us in the northern and western portions of the excavation.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural granular soils designed for
an allowable bearing pressure of 3,000 psf can be used for support of the proposed
residence.

All existing fill, topsoil and loose disturbed soils in tooting areas should be removed and
the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural granular soils. The footing
subgrade should then be compacted. The bearing soils should be protected from frost
and concrete should not be placed on frozen soils. Other recommendations, precautions
and limitations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be
observed.
