Box 2134 Eagle, Colorado 81631 Job No. 108 529B subjleet: Recommendations for Design of Block Site Retaining Walls, Existing Residence. Lot 2, Filing 1, Elcm Zneiner Subdivision, 1687 Buffetir Creek Road, Vail, Colorado Dear Paul: As requested, Are arc providing recorrarncndatjons for block site retaining walls at the subject site. The: services were performed in accordance with our agreement for professional services to Ccres+Landscape Architecture dated, July 13, 2012. The findings of our recommendations for the design are presented in this teport. The site retaining walls will replace existing stacked tack walls at the site that have failed. It is desired to replace the wralls with gravity concrete blocks walls and place the architectural rock on the front side of the blocks, The was will reportedly be a maximum of 44 feet in height above the ground surface. Pre-cast (solid) concrete blocks 6 feet king by 2 feet high by 2 feet deep and weighing about 4,00 lbs. each are desired as the blocks. 14epworth-Pawlak Geotechnical Previously observed a portion orthe excavation for the residence at the site when under construction and submitted our findings in a report dated September 22, 2008, Job No. 108 529A, The -roils Consisted of rilediarn dense, silty ,sandy gravel with cobbles. No free water was observed at the tinge of the excavation. Based on our analysis and experience, the proposed pre east block walls placed c to height of 4% feet will be marginally stable due excessive, tot pressure at the base of the Wall. We recommend goo-grid reinforced backfill lx-hind the walls be used to increase the wall stability. A gco-grid reinforced wall to about 5 feet tall is feasible with the limited recommended geo-grid backfill reinforcement. The geo-grid should consist of a uniaxial material such as Tonsar UIX 1000 or equivalent. The geo-grid should be placed bet-ween, each layer of blocks and extend a length of at least 2 feet behind the walls. The wall and geo-grid backfill can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95% standard Proctor density at It moisture content near optimum. cl 9 ,, i" " - 1'4! I . 3k'f 3A 574 046'17" 01 U-1 LU X V LU 2- 0 2'X2'Xb'GONORETE BLOCK5 – ON51TE 5011-5 COMPACTED TO 615% – 5PO BEHIND KALL5 U5E EX15TIN6 51TE STONE To – FACE CONCRETE BLOCK. The walls should bear oil a minimum 6 inches orC'DOT Class 6 base course and be embedded a minimum 12 inches below the ground surface, The base course should be compacted to at least 95% standard Proctor density (ASTM D698) at a moisture content near optintum. Prior to the base course placement, the subgrade should be moistened and compacted. A drain should be provided behind the walls and consist of a 4 inch diameter perforated pipe placed near the bottom of the wall surrounded by drain gravel, The drain gravel should be covered by filter fabric such as Mirari 140N. If wall heights and are taller from those we have assumed, we sboukl be contacted to review our design recommendations. Sonic field niodifications to the wall design may be needed. We should observe the subgrade conditions below the walls, and test compaction of the base course below the walls and tile wall backfill on a regular basis during construction, If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office Sincerely, HEPWORTH_:-WLAK GEOTUCHNICAL, INC.
