EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Sunrise Environmental, Inc. (SEI) provided air monitoring services for Reliance Environmental
Services, LLC (RES) at the Lodge Tower, 200 Vail Road, Unit 687, Vail Colorado April 27,
2012. The field representative for SEI was Mr. Scott D. Sanders. Work �vas performed in
conjunction with asbestos abatement at the site. Asbestos abatement was conducted by Reliance
Environmental Services, LLC; a Colorado Department of Health licensed General Abatement
Contractor(GAC).
SEI's scope of work included collection and analysis of final clearance air samples, performing
visual inspections of work areas prior to collection of air samples, and assembling project
documentation.
Subsequent to cleanup, SEI visually inspected the containment area for visible dust and debris.
Upon passage of visual inspection, SEI collected final clearance air samples and notified
Reliance Environmental Services, LLC when laboratory results indicated airborne fiber
concentrations were not in excess of O.OIf/cc as required by Colorado Department of Pub(ic
Health and Environment (CDPHE), Regulation 8.
At project completion, air-monitoring results indicate concentrations of airborne fibers were not �
in excess of 0.01 f/cc as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)and CDPHE for
re-occupancy following asbestos abatement.

INTRODUCTION
SEI provided air monitoring services for Reliance Environmental Services, LLC at the Lodge '
Tower, 200 Vail Road, Unit 687, Vail Colorado April 27, 2012. The field representative for SEI
was Mr. Scott D. Sanders. Work was performed in conjunction with the removal of drywall i
texture from Unit 687. Asbestos abatement was conducted by Reliance Environmental Services,
LLC; a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) licensed General
Abatement Contractor(GAC). '
SEI performed the final visual inspection, and the collection and analysis of Phase Contrast
Microscopy (PCM) air samples after asbestos abatement. SEI successfully participates in the
AIHA Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) Program (Laboratory ID# 196102) and participates
in inter-laboratory and intra-laboratory round robin analysis. All SEI analysts have been
certified in NIOSH 582E to perform collection and analysis of PCM air samples.
SCOPE OF WORK
Reliance Environmental Services, LLC's scope of work for this project consisted of the
removal/disposal of approximately 2840 square feet of asbestos-containing drywall texture and
associated drywall from Unit 687.
SEI has performed the following Industrial Hygiene services:
• Performed a visual inspection of the abatement area,
• Collection and analysis of PCM air samples to monitor concentrations of airborne
fibers after asbestos abatement in accordance with CDPHE Regulation No. 8,
• Assembled and submitted project documentation.
The findings set forth in this report are strictly limited in time and scope to the date of the
evaluation. The conclusions presented in the Report are based solely on the services described
therein, and not on scientific tasks or procedures beyond the scope of agreed upon services. SEI
performed a visual inspection and collected final clearance air samples following the removal of
asbestos containing spray-applied drywall texture from the unit. SEI was not responsible for
determining which building materials at the site contain asbestos. SEI was not responsible for
determining which materials were to be included in the abatement scope of work. Evaluation of
asbestos containing materials at the site other than the spray-applied drywall texture and
associated drywall removed from the residence was not included in SEI's scope of agreed
services.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

completed.

AIR MONITORING
Sample Collection
The effective filter area for samples collected on April 27, 2012 was 385mm'.
PCM samples were collected on 25 millimeter(mm) mixed cellulose ester membrane filters (0.8
micron pore size). The filters were preassembled by the manufacturer in conductive three stage
cassettes with extension cowls.
Air samples were collected at an average flow rate of 15.0 liters per minute (LPM). Flow rates
were recorded at the beginning and at the end of the sampling period using a rotometer calibrated
with a DryCal Primary Standard flow calibrator. All air samples were collected open-faced and
positioned at breathing zone height (approximately five feet above the floor) with exposed
portion of the cassette facing downward. Clearance air samples were collected aggressively and
in accordance with CDPHE Regulation #8. (See Appendix A for sample data)
PCM Analvsis Methodolo�v
PCM samples were analyzed by SEI according to the NIOSH 7400 Method ("A" counting rules).
This method can be found in the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods. All air sample results
are calculated with blank corrections, checked and reviewed. Unused portions of samples are
archived three months unless client requests special handling. Laboratory analysis was
accomplished utilizing a Phase Contrast Microscope. Size and fiber counts were performed at
400X magnification. The microscopy field area (MFA), defined by the Walton-Beckett
Graticule is 0.00785mm'

LOD: Limit of Detection; the calculated lower limit of detection expressed in fibers per
cubic centimeter. Based on limit of detection of(5.5/100 fibers/field).

<LOD: Less than the limit of Detection; thus, the analytical result is less than the value
indicated in the LOD column.
CONCLUSIONS
At project completion, air-monitoring data indicate concentrations of airborne fibers were not in
excess of 0.01 f/cc as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and CDPHE for
re-occupancy following asbestos abatement.

I have reviewed options to maintain the ceiling fire ratings in the Lodge Tower building where
the Mitsubishi fan coil penetrates the rated ceiling. It is my understanding that a 2 hour rating is
required. Currently the ceiling construction incorporates two layers of 5/8" Type X gypsum
wallboard installed on the underside of the metal bar joists.
Due to the limited space available between the bar joists and the size of the fan coil unit a two
layer dywall enclosure will not fit. We recommend that a 1/4"thick plywood box be constructed
to enclose the fan coil unit. The box shall be sized as required to allow access to the control
board located on the side of the fan coil. To obtain the 120 minutes of fire resistance we
recommend that Firefree 88 be installed as specitied by the manufacturer. Per the attached letter,
the Firefree 88 provides 1 minute of protection per 1 mill dry film thickness. Based on this
previous testing I recommend that 120 mils of dry film thickness be applied to the inside of the
box enclosing the fan coil unit. All 1'' and small penetrations through this box for power,
hangers, drain lines, etc shall be made with steel, ferrous or copper conduits, pipes or tubes and
the annual space is to be protected by an approved through-penetration firestop system installed
and tested in accordance with ASTM E 814 or UL 1479.
To achieve the required dry mil thickness of the Firefree 88 the product should be applied to
accommodate the solids to liquid ratio of 67%. If 120 miis of dry thickness is required,
approximately 180 mils of wet pcoduct will need to be applied. The dry mil thickness will need
to be verified with a Deflesko PosiTector 200 or equivalent.

Per Table 721.62(1) of the 2009 IBC a single layer of Type X gypsum wallboard of the wall
board provides a 40 minute allowance. Where space allows, Type X gypsum wallboard may be
installed on the inside of the box and the Firefree dry mill thickness may be reduced accordingly.
If one layer of 5/8" Type X gypsum wallboard is installed the dry mil thickness of the Firefree 88
may be reduced by 40 mils.
To further protect the structure in case the Firefree 88 is accidentally damaged and not repaired
during installation I recommend that this rated box be sprayed on the outside of the box with an
additional 1/2"to 1" of fire resistant �naterial used for protection of structural steeL �
