PUBLIC WORKS AND THE PUBLIC WAY PERMIT PROCESS
How it relates to Building Permits:
Fill out the attached check list with the Building Permit Application.
If yes was answered to any of the questions then a "Public Way" permit is required. you
can pick up an application at either Community Development, located at 75 South Frontage
Road or Public Works, located at 1309 Elkhorn Drive.
Notice sign-offs for utility companies. ALL utilities must field verifu (locate) respective
utilifles prior to signing application, Some utility companies require up to 48 hours notice to
schedule a locate.
A construction traffic control/staging plan must be prepared on a separate sheet of paper.
An approved site plan may also be used. This plan will show locations of all traffic control
devices (signs, cones, etc.) and the work zone, (area of construction, staging, etc.). This
plan will expire on November 1st and will need to be resubmitted for consideration for
approval through the winter. Be aware that your resubmission for winter may be denied
depending on the location of construction.
Sketch of work being performed must be submitted indicating dimensions (length, width
and depth of work). This may be drawn on the traffic control plan or a site plan for the job.
Submit completed application to the Public Work's office for review. If required, locates will
be scheduled for the Town of Vail electricians and irrigation crew. The locates take place in
the morning, but may require up to 48 hours to pedorm.
The Public Work's Construction Inspector will review the application and approve or deny
the permit. You will be contacted as to the status and any requirements that may be
needed, Most permits are released within 48 hours of being received, but please allow up
to one (1) week to process.
As soon as the permit is approved, the Building Department will be notified, allowing the
"Building Permit" to be released. Please do not confuse the "Public Way Permit" with a
"Building Permit".
) NOTE: The above process is for work in a public way ONLY. Public Way
Permits are valid only until November 15th. A new Public Way Permit is required
each year if work is not complete. Re-application each November 15th does not
mean an automatic renewal.

BUILDING PERMIT ISSUANCE TIME FRAME
If this permit requires a Town of Vail Fire Department Approval, Engineer's (Public Works)
review and approval, a Planning Depaftment review or Health Department review, and a review
by the Building Department, the estimated time for a total review will take as long as three (3)
weeKs.
All commercial (large or small) and all multi-family permits will have to follow the above
mentioned maximum requirements. Residential and small projects should take a lesser amount
of time. However, if residential or smaller projects impact the various above mentioned
departments with regard to necessary review, these projects may also take three (3) weeks to
review and approve.
Every attempt will be made by this department to expedite this permit as soon as possible.

that if the permit is not picked up by the expiration date, that I must still pay the plan check fee
and that if I fail to do so it may affect future permits that I apply for.

Amendment to the 1999 N.E.C. Town of Vail Ordinance 10-1-6.
o Overhead services are not allowed in the Town of Vail,o Underground services have to be in conduit (PVC) from the transformer to the electric meter, main disconnect
switch and to the first electrical distribution circuit breaker panel.
s The main disconnect switch shall be located next to the meter on the exterior wall of the structure easilv
accessible.
o All underground conduits are required to be inspected before back-filling the trench.a In multFfamily dwelling units, no electrical wiring or feeder cables shall pass from one unit to another. Common
walls and spaces are accepted.
c NM Cable (Romex) is not allowed in commercial buildings or structures exceeding three (3) stories.o No use of aluminum wire smaller than size #8 will be permitted with the Town of Vail.
TOWN OF VAIL ELECTRICAL PERMIT GUIDELINES
a All installations of exterior hot tubs or spa's require a DRB approval from planning. This application will
not be accepted without a copy of the DRB approval form attached (if applicable).
o If this permit is for installation of an exterior hot tub or spa on a new elevated platform or deck over
30" above grade, you must also obtain a building permit.
o If this permit is for installation of an exterior hot tub or spa on any existing deck or elevated platform,
a structural engineer must review the existing condition and verify that it will support the added
concentrated load. Please provide a copy of the structural engineers wet stamped letter or drawing
with this application.

Conpany for the structure they have built behind my residence (epeci-
fically, the structure buitt on lot 4t block E of the Vail das Schone
Fili.ne #1).
I wish to send furthe r comrnent concerning this oatter. My siSnature to
this application for exception was solely due to the fact that the
building is now completed on this site. But I have been wondering hov'
if this flas contrary to your building codes, this ever occured. It
seems to me there oust have been sone uay of preventing trre construc-
tion to completion of an i11ega1 structure. I nonrt sign any additj-onaf
applications for exceptlon in this neighborhood (and I may be sorry I
signed this one). But I hope your officials prevent any such constnre-
tioh before it gets to lts final stages.
