SCOPE OF WORK
A.1. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materialsl equipment
and services necessary and reasonably incedental for the
completion of all work as shown and specified herein. The
work includes but is not necesgarily limited to the following:
a. Remove all existing shakes, Iace felts, eubstrait felts' mem-
branes or other coverings, penetration flashings or any othe!
accessories that should be iemoved to complete the shake roof
area in a workrnanlike manner.
b. Existing penetration flashings shall be removed and replaced
with new metal flashing as outlined in the approved materials
Iist.
c. AII cap metal that now exists at the toP course of shake area
shall be re-used, when this metat is reinstalled over the new
top course of shakes a 4n wide layer of polysulphide caulking
shall be installed at all metal laps.

A.1. Installation Preparation

c. After tear-off, remove all loose dirt, gravel and debris from
roof surface.
d. Remove all unused accessories that are determined by the Owner

e. Dispose of all tear-off debris at Contractors expense and
in accordance ltith all city, state and federal regulations
as pertaining to waste disposal.
f. Inspect total deck area for deterioration as work Progresses,notify the Owner or his agent should any defective or deterior-
ated deck be found.
B. INSTALLATION
1. General
a. AII work shall be installed in strict and complete accordance
with all manufacturer recornmendations and guidelines.
b. AII general reguirements, sPecial conditions, installation
instiuctiong and detail drawings are part of these specifica-
tions and must be carried out with no deviation unleas Inodi-
fications are made by the owner or his agent in writing.
C. INSTALLATION OF ICE AND WATER SHIELD BITUTTTENE MEMBRANE
1. General Membrane Instructions - Primer application
a. Atl deck to receive primer must be clean and dry to the touch.
b. Install Grace P-3000 primer to cleaned deck areas at a rate of
250 to 350 square feet per gallon.
c. Primer may be applied to the deck by using a sPrayer or lambs-
wool roller.
d. Allow primer to dry for I hour or until tack free. The priner
will dry to a grey color.
e. Prime only the areas which will be covered with membrane in a
working day. Areas not covered with membrane in 24 hours must
be re-primed.

from the air accumulate on the surface. f
g. Metal or other dense surfaces do not require priming but must be
clean, dry and free of loose paint, rust or other contaminants.
h. Apply bituthene primer only when ambient and surface temPerature
are above 25o F.
D. INSTALLATION OF ICE AND WATER SHIELD . BITUTHENE MEMBRANE
l. Membrane installation
a. Deck must be cleaned and properly primed before installation of
ice and r'tater shield membrane.
b. Apply ice and water shield membrane on).y when the ambient and
eurface temperatures are above 40o F.
c. Apply bituthene membrane from the low point to the high point
across the fall fine so that laps shed water.
d. All edge and end seams must be overlapped at least 2)t'. Stagger
end laps.
e. RolI the entire membrane firmly and completely as soon as possibJ.e.
Use a Iinoleum roller or a standard water filled garden roller
Iess than 30" wide. Cover the face of the roller with a resili'.-
ent material such as k" of plastic f.oam or 2 wraps of indoor-
outdoor carpet. SeaI all end laps at the end of each work day.
f. At penetrations, or other flashing details, aPPIY a double l?y.tof membrane around Posts or projections in at least 5" in aII
directions. and seal all terminations with EM-3000.
g. Seal all daily terminations with a thin troweled bead of EIt{-3000.- Bituthene membrane must not be applied in any areas pernanently
exposed to sunlight.

k. At valleys and ridges cut the membrane into 4 to 6 foot lengths.
Peel the release paper, center the sheet over the valley or ridge,
drape and press it in place working from the center of the valley
or ridge outward in each direction. For valleys, apPly membrane
starting at the low poj.nt and working upwards. Overlap all sheets
a minimum of 6".

l. Lace FeIt Installation
a. Install Nicolet #411 18" asbestos felt in a manner to lace each
and every course of shakes.

and extend onto the deck membrane.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYI
FTX CEDAR SHAKES
AS A CLASS "C" ROOF COVERING
Class "C" labeled red cedar shakes may be applied over
open spaced or solid sheathing.
Roof Pltch and Exposur.
Handsplit shakes should be used on roofs where the slope
or pitch is sufficient to insure good drainage. Manimum
recommended pitch is l/6th or 4-in-12 14' vertical rise for
each 12' horizontal runl. Maximum recommendect weather
exposure is 10" for 24" shakes.
Roof Appllcatlon
Along the eave line, a 36" wide strip of Type 30 roofing
felt is laid over the sheathing. The beginning or starter
course at the eave line should be doubled. After each
course of shakes is applied, an 18" wide strip of Type 30
roofing felt is laid over the top portion of the shakes and
extending onto the sheathing, with the bottom edge of
the telt oositioned at a distance above the butt equal to
twice the weather exposure.
Nalllng
Use two hot-drpped zinc-coated nails for each shake,
placing them approximately one inch from each edge,
and high enough to be covered an inch or two by the
succeeding course. Nails should be long enough to
penetrate at least %' into or through the sheathing.
Minimum naif size, 6d with 7/32" head. The butts of the
shakes should project from l/? to 2 inches from the first
roof board so that the rainwater will spill into the gutter
or to the ground without working down the side of the
building. Individual shakes should be spaced apart about
l/4' ro 3/8" to allow for possible expansion. These joints
or sDaces between shakes should be broken or offset at
least lth" in adjacent courses and should be kept out of
direct alignment in alternate courses.
Vallcys, Hlps and Rldgcs
The roof valley flashing shall be provided of not less than
No. 28 galvanized sheet qauge corrosion-resistant metal
applied over an underlayment of not less than Type l5 felt.
The metal shall extend at least ll inches from the center
line each way. H,ps and ridges can be site-fabricated, or
factoly-formed hip and ridge units can be used. Weather
exposure should be the same as that used in applying
shakes in the fielct of the roof, and nails should be of
sufficient length lusually 8df to firmly attach the hip and
ridge shakes to the underlyrng sheathing. Flashing and
counter-flashrng should be applied as illustrated.

FTX CEDAR SHAKES
AS A CLASS "B" ROOF COVERING
FTX Class "8" labeled cedar shakes may be applied as a
Class "8" roof covering in the same manner as a Class "C"
roof covering except that a solid deck ol l/2" minimum
phl/ood or equivalent must be used under the shakes.
The Class "8" Instructions for shingle application are the
same as for the Class "8" shake applicataon except there is
no need for felt interlayment. Complete application
instructions are included with each shioment.
