Dear Mr. McCleary:
As requested, Chen-Northenr, Inc., observed the excavation at the subject
site on l4ay 22, 1989 to evaluafe the soils exposed for foundation support.
The findings of our work and recomnendations for the foundation design are
presented in this report.
At bhe time of our site visit, the excavations for the residence and
garage areas had been cut to depths between about 2 to 4 feet below the adja-
cent ground surface. The soils exposed in the excavations consisted mainly of
slightly silty sandy gravels. There were localized areas of silty gravelly
sand wttich based on probing appeared to between about 4 to 8 inches deep.
Within the southwestern part of the central resldence area, water was ponded
to a maxirun depth of about 1 foot whlch appears to be the groundwater level.
The results of gradation analyses performed on samples of the sandy gravel
(minus 1 l/2-inch fraction) and the sand layer are presented on Fig. 1.
We understand the structure will be of 1og construction and is proposed
to be supported on spread footi.ngs designed to lmpose a maximum bearing pres-
sure of 2000 psf. Based on the soil. condiLions exposed in the excavationt
spread footings placed on the natural soils below any exisbing topsoilr fill
or disturbed soifs are recommended for support of the building. The sands
overlying the gravels ane compresslble compared to the underlying gravel soils
but due Lo their limited thickness we expect foundation seftlements will be
less than 1 inch. In the southwestern part of the central residence area'
strucburaL fill consisting of screened, fine gravel can be placed to reestab-lish foundation bearing 1evel above the groundwater Level. Footings can be
sized to impose the as-designed 2000 psf maxi.rnm bearing pressure. Footings
should have a mininnrm width of 16 inches for continuous wal1s and 2 feet for
columrs. Continuous foundation walls should be rei.nforced to span an unsup-
ported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retalning
structures should also be deslgned to resisb a laLeral earth pressur€ cofr€s-
ponding to an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 40 pcf. A perimeter
foundation drain should be provided to prevent buildup of hydrostatic pressure
behind retalning walls and wetting of the crawl space level. The crawl space

areas should be vent,ilated or otherwlse protected from high humidity. FiIlplaced beneath floor slab, walkway and driveway areas should consist of pre-
dominantly granular soil compacted to at least 957 of standard Proctor densltyat a moisture confent near optim:m. The perimeter backfitl surface should be
graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building.
The recornmendations subrnitted in this letter are based on our observationof the so1ls exposed within the foundation excavations. Since we did not
conduct subsurface exploration, we have asstned the condifions observed in the
excavations represent those withj.n the depth of influence of the foundation.In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface
condilions below the excavation, drilling would be requlred. It is possible
the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the reconmendations
contalned in this letter.
