General Information:
This application is required for proposals involving minor exterior alterations and/or site improvements'
Proposals to add landscaping do not require DRB approval unless they involve the addition of patios,
water features, grading, or the addition of retaining walls.

. Landscape Plan:. Scale of 1" = 20'or larger. Landscape plan must be drawn at the same scale as the site plan,. . Location of existing trees, 4" diameter or larger, Indicate trees to remain, to be relocated
(including new location), and to be removed. Large stands of trees may be shown (as bubble) if
the strand is not being affected by the proposed improvements and grading.
r Indicate all existing ground cover and shrubs.. Detailed legend, listing the type and size (caliper for deciduous trees, height for mnifers, gallon
size for shrubs and height for foundation shrubs) of all the existlng and proposed plant material
including ground cover.. Delineate critical root zones for o<isting trees in close proximity to site grading and construction.
. Indicate the location of all proposed plantings.
. The location and type of existing and proposed watering systems to be employed in caring for
plant material following its installation.. Existing and proposed contour lines. Retaining walls shall be included with the top of wall and

1. If the utility approval & verification form has signatures from each of the utility companies, and no comments are made directly
on the form, the Town will presume that there are no problems and the development can proceed.
2. If a utility company has concerns with the proposed constructionr the utility representative shall note directly on the utility
verification form that there is a oroblem which needs to be resolved. The isue should then be detailed in an attached letter to the
Town of Vail. However, please keep in mind that it is the responsibility of the utili$ company and the applicant to resolve

Pre-aoplication Meetinq
A pre-application meetng with Town of Vail staff is encouraged. The purpose of a pre-application meeting is to
identiff any critical issues pertaining to the applicant's proposal and to determine the appropriate development
review proces for an application. In many cases, the pre-application meeting help6 to expedite the
development revia,rr process as critical issues are idenUfied and dealt with in the preliminary stages. A pre
application meeting may be scheduled by contacting Joe Suther at970.479.2L28 or isuther@vailqov.com
Time Reouirements
The Design Review Board meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. A complete application form
and all accompanying material must be accepted by the Community Development Department prior to
application deadlines. A schedule of DRB meetings and associated application deadlines may be found on the
World Wide Web at www.vailgov.com For a new residential development, the application deadline is typically
3.5 weeks prior to a Design Review Board hearing.
Review Criteria
The proposal will be reviewed for compliance with the Design Guidelines as set fotth in Title 12, (Zoning
Regulations) and Title 14 (Development Standards) of the Town of Vail Municipal Code,
Reouirements for orooefties located in hazard arcas
If a property is located in or adjacent to a mapped hazard area (i.e. snow avalanche, rock fall, debris flow,
floodplain, weUand, poor soils, etc.), the Oommunity Development Department may require a site-specific
geological investigaUon. If a site-specific aeological investigation determines that the subject propefi is located
in a geologically sensitive area, the property owne(s) must sign an affidavit recognizing the hazard report prior
to the issuance of a building permit. Applicants are strongly gncouraged to consult with Community
Development staff prior to submitting a DRB application to determine the relationship of the property to all
mapped hazards.
Reouired PlJn Sheet Format
For all survep, sibe plans, landscape plans and other site improvement plans, all of the following must be
shown.
1. Plan sheet size must be 24"x36". For large prcJects, larger plan size may be allowed.
2. Scale. The minimum scale is 1"=20'. All plans must be at the same scale.
3. Graphic bar scale.
4. North anow.
5, TlUe block, project name, project address and legal description.
6. Indication of plan preparer, address and phone number.
7, Dates of original plan preparation and all revision dates'
8. Vicinity m6p or location map at a scale of 1"=1,000' or larger.

Desion Review Board Meetinq Reouirements
For new construction and additions, the applicant must sfake and tape the project site to indicate property lines,
proposed buildings and building comers. All trees to be removed must be taped. The applicant must ensure
that staking done during the winter is not buried by snow. All site tapings and staking must be completed prior
to the day of the DRB meeting.
The applicant or their representative shall be present at the Design Review Board Hearing. Applicants who fail
to appear before the Design Review Board on their scheduled meeting date and who have not asked in advance
that discussion on their item be posQoned, will have their items removed from the DRB agenda until such time
as the item has been republished.
If the DRB approves the application with conditions or modifications, all conditions of approval must be resolved
prior to the issuance of a building permit.
StaffAooroval
The Administrator (a member of the planning staff) may review and approve Design Review applications,
approve with ceftain modifications, deny the application, or refer the application to the Design Review Board for
a decision. All staff approvals are reviewed by the Design Review Board and any staff decision is subject to
final approval by the DRB.
Additonal Review and Fees
If this application requires a separate review by any local, state or Federal agency other than the Town of Vail,
the applicaUon fee shall be increased by $200.00. Examples of such review, may include, but are not limited to:
Colorado Departrnent of Highway Access Permits, Army Corps of Engineers 404, etc.
The applicant shall be responsible for paying any publishing fees in excess of 50o/o of the applicaUon fee. If, at
the applicants request, any matter is postponed for hearing, causing the matter to be re-published, then the
entire fee for such re-publication shall be paid by the applicant.
Applications deemed by the Community Development Department to have design, land use or other lssues,
which may have a significant impact on the communlty, may require review by external consultants in addition
to Town staff. Should a determination be made by Town staff that an external consultant is needed, the
Community Development Department may hire the consultant. The Departrnent shall estimate the amount of
money necessary to pay the consultant and this amount shall be forwarded to the Town by the applicant at the
time of filing an application. The applicant shall pay o(penses incurred by the Town in excess of the amount
forwarded by the application to the Town within 30 days of notification by the Town. Any excess funds will be
returned to the applicant upon review completion.

Dear Tom,
Thank you for the time and energy that you spent recently in presenting the proposal for your Vail home lo the
Town and ils Boards. As you knoiv, the Design Review Board approved the application for a re-roof using the
Decra stonecovered shingle application for your residence. The Board expressed some concem, however,
regarding the linearity of the product upon application and requested that the edges be varied upon the roof at
the time that the material is applied to your structure.
Secondly, I have staff approved the remaining aspects of the application, including the driveway and walkway
changes, the revisions to existing feneshation, the addition of stone to the residence (to terminate at inside
corners only!), and the infill of an existing second story deck, thereby creating eighty seven (87) square feet of
new GRFA.
Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you. Thank you for your patience in what is not
always a simple design review process. I have enclosed a copy of the Design Review approval form for your
records.

Heritage* Valley Application
After installing the underlayment and valley flashing:
. Apply the first course of shingles along the eaves of one of the intersecting roof planes and across the valley.
Note: For proper flow of water over the trtmmed shingle, alwa-,-s stat"t applying the shingles on the roof plune
that has the lower slope or lesser height.
. Extend the end shingle at least 12" onto the adjoining roof. Apply succeeding courses in the same manner,
extending them across the valley and onto the adjoining roof.
. Press the shingles tightly into the valley.
. Use normal shingle fastening methods.
Note: No fastener should be within 6" of the valley centerline, and two fasteners should be placed at the end of
each shingle crossing the valley.
. To the adjoining roof plane, apply one row of shingles vertically facing the valley and 2" back from the
valley centerline.
Note: For a neater installation, snap a chalkline over the shingles for guidance.
. To complete the valley, apply the shingles on the adjoining roof plane by positioning the tip of the shingle of
each row atthe 2" point from the centerline where the edge of the vertical shingle has been applied covering
the vertical shinele.

above named property. I feel that your home is a welcome
addition to Vail and on behalf of the Department of Community
Development, would Llke to express my appreciatlon for your
efforts
fn order to receive a Certificate of Occupancy, it is
necesSa.ry that the exterior of your residence be completed in
accordance with plans approved by Design Review Board, It is
also necessary that a final building inspection be made to assure
compliance with Town of Vail Building Codes. It is also necesse,rythat you submit .a landscaping plan for your property, receive
approval for the plan, and install landscape material in
accordance with the approved plan. It is also necessary that a
culvert be installed under your driveway to permit drainage to
pass under your driveway
If it proves impossible to have this work done j-n the nearfuture, the Town of Vail can lssue you a Temporary Certificate of
Occupancy upon you agreeing to have this work done prior to a
mutually agreed date in the future,
